The last one is a picture that comes up on Google images if you search for melanistic bengals - my guess would be that the rest are the same.

Just remembered this thread, the answer to the pics.

Only one is a melanistic Bengal and that is the last one.

black and black and white are the least popular cats in rescue - lots of people have odd supersitions about black cats and black and white are considered boring - many older (above 5!!) blacks in certain rescues which will remain nameless would be pts as impossible to home

*waves*

ok so was watching a play last week, right, and there was a black cat in the play...

not a melanistic...

bengals aren't just the markings to me, and i'm not a breeder so no technical whatsit but...it's not just the markings, it's the shape and the attitude...the shape of legs, head, neck, tail...

that slender, streamlined ...shape...repetition, sorry but *gestures* nah...black "cats" totally different!

Yeh I've actually considered getting a melanistic as it's the personality/brains I'm really after. Do they go for a lot less than the spotteds? :)

Hi Everyone

what a fantastic thread - I love black cats. My favourite one's pic is the first cat which I note is a domestic.

I used to have a fantastic black cat some years ago. He went out one day and never returned. I posted flyers and advertised him as missing on the radio and in the local nespapers but never seen him again ?

He was a big fav of mine that I got from the cats protection league - consequently I too hav had a notion to a melanistic bengal - one like a panther !.

Cheers
Ian

I recently rescued a very young black kitten and later discovered his coat had subtle spots/stripes. There's also a very faint silver marking on his chest. Whether this indicates bengal, I don't know, but are there any other breeds having a similar coat ?

Tazzy - my 14 yr old moggy is a black rescue we got at 12 weeks - he has very definite shading - mainly on his front forelegs/paws, across his brow and between his ears, unfortunately as he has aged these markings have faded now - as has the amazing glossiness of his coat - now affectionately know as Tatty cat rather than Tazzy cat

Any black cat (especially young ones, it tends to disappear as they grow up) can have a "ghost pattern" ;). It is also possible that he's a black smoke, thus showing up his pattern : does he have white underhair ?

A black smoke (Egyptian Mau, shows up perhaps more than on moggies) :

Edit : I must say that would be IMO a lovely color for Bengals... anyone heard of any which may have cropped up ? ;) (melanistic + silver)

Actually he looks more like the cat sitting on the mantle, except in bright light, the black is more reddish. Other than the few silvery hairs on the chest, there is no silver.

Unfortunately, this site is too complex for my computer skills, otherwise I could post some photos.

Thanks

Ben

Bit off topic, but I've heard that from lots of places and have never understood why it's the case. I can understand why black Bengals aren't popular because they've not got the classic appearance but in rescue I would have thought black cats would be popular.

people believe them to be unlucky - black and whites are unpopular because they are considered to look boring - the rescue I go to always has about 80% blacks or black and white
