My moggie has a urinary blockage. He is at the emergency vet w/a catheder now. They said he had crystals in his urine. The vet is insisting it is Felidae that caused it. I thought Felidae was supposed to be a great food, much better than SD and now he's suffering. Does anyone have a clue what I should ask the vet? I dont know anything about this. The vet is saying he'll have to go on a prescrip. diet the rest of his life.

Do you have the composition of Felidea or did your vet study it ? Because if it's not a known brand vets may be suspicious but it may be good...

But if your cat got calculus it musn't be so good I guess , because that's what bad cat foods do !

Your cat will have to be put on urinary food for a good while, and if you try to reverse, reverse to a good quality food such as Hills I guess. You'll have to control if this is ok for your cat, if the urinary pH is high again, you'll have to keep on with prescription food...

As for what you should ask the vet... well what do you want to know ?
You can ask if it's struvite or oxalate calculus, you can ask if your cat had to be "sondé" (put a small tube in the ureter to deblock it), if he thinks an OP is necessary to remove the calculus in the bladder...

I keep hearing and reading that the single most important thing with crystals is to make sure the cat gets enough water to flush them out. Most cats on dry food diets don't drink enough. If you have to feed prescription food, you might want to ask the vet if it is also available in a canned form or mix the food with water.

Ok I'll definately ask about wet food. I feel like this is mostly my fault for putting him on this food, but somethin else too. I noticed yesterday that the water bowl was empty. I thought as I walked by it, I have to fill that, but I forgot until yesterday morning. So like a total of 12 hours or something I had forgot to fill that water. I am blaming my self thinking he needed water I was too busy to just stop right then and there and get them water. I've been beating myself up over it. Im gonna fill the sink with water everyday in the bathroom I think. Or have multiple bowls all over. I never want this to happen again. Poor Rohan

Also, I think the first ingredient of Hills Science Diet in USA is meat, but the next 2 maybe 3 are grains. The reason I liked Felidae was because the first 4 ingredients are all meat. I just dont see the point in all the filler grains if he can have meats. Although now it seems my opinion doesnt matter because I have to switch him anyway.

His ultrasound showed nothing, and they easily expressed his bladder. They wanted us to watch him over the weekend So, he's home. He's vomited a huge amount, but they say thats normal. He's neutered now as well. Arwen who has been testy with him is being very nice to him. They smelled each other and Rohan is just laying on the floor. He is incredibly skinny, but I guess thats to be expected. He's very drugged up so he walks sideways and kinda looks drunk I guess. But he is home, hopefully for good.
