I have noticed that there seems to be alot of postings on here regarding loose stools. Our Bengal kitten arrived from the breeder with firm stools, he was on a diet of Technical kitten food. Foolishly we couldnt resist giving him treats such as tuna and chicken, which he loved so much that he refused to eat the cat food. He seemed to start losing weight and his stools became loose. I have since introduced other dried kitten foods, he will eat these, is gaining weight, is full of energy, has a lovely glittery coat but still has loose stools. This morning I noticed blood in the stool. This may have occurred before but this was the first time that he didnt make it to the litter tray (there goes my best rug)
Should I be worried, he seems so healthy

Hi Ali

I think we did the same as you. I think it is the sudden change in their diet because they are kittens. We reverted back to Bailey's old food and he seems to be better. Your Bengal will eventually go back to it if you dont give into him and give him chicken (i know its hard because they do love it) We give Bailey some as a treat occasionally.

Just having a few problems with where he would like to go to the loo at the moment......very fussy kittens!! Ha ha

Hi we had the same problem have you read cocomoms thread

http://www.bengalcatforums.com/forums/v ... .php?t=742

As this helped me, Oska ended up not being tolerent to eggs (often found in the dried food) since i've made sure the dried food I put done doesn't have eggs in his poo has been completely normal.

I feed him tinned food (generally whiskas or felix) purina one (for kittens) and a the weekends he gets treats raw chicken legs, lamb mince or beef mince. None of which affects his poo.

Thanks for the replies, it all helps to stop my new found interest in cat poo developing into an unhealthy obsession

The 7 week old female we have just got has had the runs for a day or so, she seems very healthy running around and everything,we are feeding them on whiskers kitten food and biscuits, the Breeder was giving her Whiskers meat but she gave her royal canine biscuits. Do you think that is why?

Have you phoned the breeder?

We did all warn you about taking kittens too young from breeders who don't give a damn Caroline!

Anyways for the girl your best putting her back on the RC biscuits and it's just far too early to swap and change around with her food at the moment, things like this need to be done very gradually which her breeder should of informed you about.....bengals need a high quality diet especially kittens. The boys urination problem could be one of a few things so your best taking him along to the vets for checks to be on the safe side.

It may be the brand of litter your using thats causing the problem so contact the breeder and find out exactly what they've been using.....you should have been given a sample of food and litter at the very least when you took them home, this is what you get when you deal with people like this I'm afraid!

Also did the breeder say if they'd been wormed yet or anything, the little girl will have only just really been weaned onto solids probably less than 2 weeks ago so I'm guessing she hasn't.....this needs to be done straight away so ask your vet on wednesday for some decent wormers.

p.s what was the injection for exactly?

Luke

Hi Caroline,

Luke is right asking if the kitten has been wormed. I know you say she has but I'd worm her again. We use Panakur paste for 3 days and then again in 3 weeks for three days again. When she is 6 months old you can give her 1 Milbemax or Drontal tablet and she won't need doing again for 6 months.

Don't give her too much chicken because she'll end up not wanting to eat her biscuits :?

If she has really bad runs, I'd take her biscuits away tonight to give her stomach a rest. Just leave her with fresh water. Then only give her small meals 3 or 4 times a day. Preferably just the biscuits. Just a thought did the breeder tell you NOT to give them milk as this is not good for them. They can't digest cows milk.

Ask your vet for some probiotic paste. Diarsanyl is excellent. I found it clears them up in 24 hours :D
or you can buy it on line here:
http://www.vetuk.co.uk/index.php?main_p ... ucts_id=30

Hope they get better soon.
Just remembered also Meemonkey mentioned the cat litter...make sure also that they are using similar litter trays, a lot of cats don't like hooded or ones with flaps on. They might prefer a basic square tray.

If they are in a big room put litter trays in all 4 ccorners until he gets the hang of it. They don't like to poo in a tray if it needs cleaning or if there is poo left in from the other kitten :?

Why does the use of the word "poo" make me chuckle!

We also use panacur paste for the kittens too, mainly because its less offending to their little delicate tummies because of the 3 day treatment aspect.....theres no chance of them spitting it all out either!

We normally worm them twice whilst they're with us to be sure, you can worm every 2-3 weeks if needed.

We've found Milbemax kitten tabs to be a little bit strong for the smaller kittens out of the litter in the past, but as Elaine said they should be fine on them after 6 months.

They need more than just the chicken though, its fine as a treat now and then but they really need proper kitten food with all the nutrients even when they're feeling poorly......the vet can supply you with some of Hills PD food whilst she's got a delicate stomach aswell as the probiotic.

Dry biscuits digest at a slower rate the wet food so I'd also recommend take them up for a few days.....the Hills PD food is chicken and rice based so its nice and gentle for her!

Also did the vet tell you what the injection was for?

Hiya
thanks for your replies, the vet gave her an antibiotic injection (it seems to have done the trick) she has only been for a poo once since then. The vet told me not to give her anything but the chicken untill she sees her tomorrow.

Took her again today, everything seems fine, but she has only been for a poo once since I went the vets on Monday, I can mix her kitten food with the chicken now. The vet wormed her and gave her another antibiotic injection. (just to be save)Hope she goes the toilet now, if she hasn't been by tomorrow I have to get intouch with the vet again.
