I just checked the medications I got from the vet to treat my foster cat. It includes the painkiller Metacam, 0.3 ml tomorrow, then 0.1 ml every three days. I always check medications out online to make sure I know about potential side effects etc, and I'm shocked to discover a whole slew of horror stories about cats dying from acute renal failure or internal bleeding after getting even small doses of Metacam. There are big warnings all over the web that Metacam given orally is for dogs only and not to be used in cats.

I suppose it's mostly an overdosage effect and they know what they're doing at the vet clinic, but I'm more than just a bit annoyed that they didn't even mention possible side-effects to me. This is obviously not a harmless drug to use in cats. Does anyone here have experience with using Metacam? What is the safe dosage for cats?

i'd not heard of the horror stories...metacam is used very often here as an anti-inflammatory & painkiller. the dosage advised on NOAH is 0.1mg per kg of bodyweight for a single dose, then further doses of 0.05mg per kg.
