For around 3-4 days we have noticed Hestia has lost a lot of weight, on 3rd sept she was 6lbs 4ozs today she is 5lbs 8ozs she isnt eating but drinking tons of water, I have spoken with Gavin and she did the same thing this time last year. She has become lethargic and depressed.

The vet gave Hestia a blood test this morning and it came back she has pancreatitis and one of her kidneys is smaller than the other one. They wanted to put her on a drip and give her a dose of antibiotics and painkillers, only Hestia didnt want the vet to touch her, so we have had to let the vet sedate her. Hopefully by this evening she will be picking up and eating then she will be allowed home.

Sorry to hear about the scare with Hestia, hope things improve soon. If she's had the same thing before and recovered then it's hopefully something temporary again this time. Do you think it's a diet thing with her? The link you posted seems to suggest that it could be in some cases with cats.

It could well be a diet thing, we are going to feed her fresh fish and chicken for a couple of days. The vet is going to give us some pouches to try too.

We just came back from the vets, we had to go and visit her, she is almost back to her normal self, she gave the vet the run around as she wouldnt let her put the drip in so had to be sedated. She was still on the drip and the vet will let us know by 5:15 whether she will be coming home tonight.

That's good news, you must be very relieved. Does the vet have any idea what might have caused the pancreatitis?

its one of those things when there is no real explanation what caused it, it could be anything from and infection to bad diet. (bad as in not suitable for her). The royal canin sensitive is ok for all of them so we are just going to feed them all it, it cant do any harm. It is just normal dry but is wheat and gluten free.

here is a quick explanation of the sensitive.

Royal Canin diet feline Sensitivity Control S/O is a highly digestible, hypoallergenic diet for kittens & cats. It has been formulated to assist in the management of dietary hypersensitivity and dietary intolerance. and is suitable for the management of some types of diarrhoea being clinically proven to be effective in the dietary management of idiopathic chronic colitis, atopic dermatitis and acute gastroenteritis

Sensitivity Control restricts the protein sources to chicken, capelin or duck and the carbohydrate source to rice or tapioca, which are seldom associated with food sensitivity in the cat. In additon it is highly digestible and lactose & wheat gluten free. Finally it is enriched with antioxidants (vitamin E and taurine)

So it wont do any harm to all of the cats. She is eating much better, she ate half a pouch, which is better than eating nothing at all, as she has just been drinking for 3 days. She will still get her treats of prawns and chicken. She still has her bandage on her leg and she was shaved on her chest. We still need to investigate her kidney but its not really causing much concern at the minute as the vet says they can function only on 25% of the kidney. But that will be next on the list.

I had Dolly and Daisy on that for a while when they had very runny poo as kittens (you can get it online without a prescription nowadays). Glad to hear she's home again and eating.
