Hello!

Both my two were wormed when we got them and came with another dose in the form of drops.

Even though they don't really go out (just when they climb up the garden gate!) I want to make sure they're wormed properly so I bought Drontal for them but can I heck make them take the tablets!! The first time I 'wormed' them they ate a little of the food but not enough to worm them properly.

The tablets are quite large and I think I'd struggle with them

I've tried the wrap the cat in a towel to stop him escaping & giving it whole = scratches, screeching and pills flying left right and centre - he objected so much he was retching!

So I went down quatering them and hiding them in meat/fish. They ate the meat not touching the tablets and left the rest

So I tried crushing them and mixing them with sardines. which resulted in two hungry cats . Little Buggers

So I guess I'll go back to drops! Any advice on the best ones to use? I've noticed lots of them only do one type of worms; is there an all rounder you can reccomend?

I haven't tried worming my Bengal myself yet but with other cats I've done the wrap in a towel thing and it's usually been OK, although you have to get the tablet right to the back of the mouth and you only get one chance! My vet taught me a trick which is to blow up their nose as soon as you get the tablet at the back of their mouth - it makes them pull their head up and back which also makes them swallow. It worked for him anyway!!

I think the two most common treatements are Drontal and Panacur, both of which treat roundworms and tapeworm. Drontal is tablets but you can get Panacur as a paste too. You can also get the pipette things that go on the back of the neck which treat fleas and roundworm combined but I don't think you can get it like that for tapeworm.

If you really can't manage yourself, why not let the vet do it?

USE CHEESE!!!!

it was my vets idea. he said that although cats cant digest lactose in significant quantities, small amounts wont harm them and it is a little known secret that most cats LOVE cheese, so he suggested breaking the tablet in 2 (i use milbemax) and wedging it right into a teeny block of mature cheddar cheese. he says with particularly suspicious cats you sometimes have to give them a bit of cheese first to "whet their appitites"

it is BRILL pilling ollie used to end exactly the same way every time, me crying holding a crumbles mess of pill, ben stomping around with clawed hands, and ollie stalking away looking sulky.

now it is an absolute BREEZE

Dolly absolutely loves cheese - I used it to try and buy her affection when I first got the moglets so maybe I'll try that next time I need to worm her. Somehow I suspect she'd eat all the cheese around the tablet and leave the thing itself on the floor

Wow! Thanks for all the advice! Think the cheese thing will work with simba as he loves the stuff!

Lola's a bit more suspicious of me though! Doesnt help that she hates big lumps of food. She's not easily fooled.

I'll persist - if not the its off to the vets!

Maybe I should invest in some of those gauntlet things that birds of prey handlers wear......
