Have been getting whiskas kitten food for our kitten but I can see that the protein content is really low (4%) which seems ridiculous.

The highest protein content I could find was butchers choice (48%?) which seems much better but it says for adult cats- do cats need kitten food or is it a gimmick? Can't imagine mummy cats making special food for their brood

Is butchers choice a good brand or is there something better?

For canned/wet food, protein % isn't really a meaningful statistic. This is because mostly what that's telling you is how much water is packed in with the meat. Even for dry food, it's also, by itself, not a very telling statistic, because manufacturer's can achieve a high percentage by stuffing food with horrible stuff like animal by-products and rendered meat.

I think for wet food, the best that you can do is look at the ingredients list, and see to what extent there is "bad stuff" in there (see links below for articles on this). Imo though, as I've grown more and more cynical about pet manufacturer's and their abilities to lie and deceive about ingredients, I think actually looking and smelling the food might be the best way to get a read on it. If it looks and smells like human-grade food, then it probably is. If it's an unrecognizable gruel of thick brown paste, I immediately cross that off my list. Who even knows what could be in there?

I'm in the US, and not familiar with Butcher's brand, but after some quick googling, they seem to be strangely reluctant to share their nutritional info. The one place I could find with supposidly nutritional information, list their ingredients as "Meat & Animal Derivatives" LOL...owch.

Whiskas has always been a pretty crappy brand imo. I suggest browsing through the "nutrition" section of this site (especially a few years back). There used to be a ton of posts from people from UK talking about cat food options. Some fierce battles were waged and some great discussions were had.

I really like this site too:

This might be of particular interest:

There is quite the quandary as to what to feed a kitten/cat. Most manufactured pet food has the necessary nutrients for a cat. However, the cheaper products use meat by-products. While the by-products are heated and rendered completely, one may not know by-products can contain feet, feathers, dead zoo animals, dead horse meat, etc. There are no federal guidelines as to what a producer can put into their pet food.

Even the best cat food can have by-products. Royal Canin, one of the top producers and one that many breeders use, uses chicken by-products in their food. They clearly state on their website, the by-products are the heart, liver and lungs.

So .... reading the labels and understanding them can be a bit overwhelming.

According to Vet Street: "After weaning, kittens do best on a diet formulated for kittens. Kitten food is more nutrient dense, supplying calories and nutrients in smaller amounts, easier for little stomachs to hold. Avoid adult cat diets labeled for maintenance; they don't have the higher protein and fat content that kittens need. A dry kitten food should have about 35 percent protein and 12 to 24 percent fat content; canned food will appear to have less because it is diluted with water."

The ideal situation is to continue to feed your kitten what the breeder fed the kitten. That may have been a raw diet-- which you may not want to continue. With Butchers, I'm not seeing anything specifically for kittens. I know there are hundreds of food products out there for kittens. Do your research, compare products, and read the labels carefully. Pretty much all the websites list the nutritional ingredients.

Royan Canin is huge among the breeders and KungsgardenCats really promotes it. Of course, they breed so many Supreme Grand Champions and International Champions and I'm betting Royal Canin sends them cases of food free. I purchased their sensitive digest for Raiden's IBD. Raiden usually gets Weruva wet food and then a Rx dry food. We all know we have to feed the kitties what they will eat.
