Hi, let’s talk about ****. Literally. I wanted to reach out to the Bengal community for some educational information (if you’re experiencing this problem) and feedback (if you’ve already dealt with this problem) on tritrichomonas foetus, but most importantly the safety of the drug used to treat.

I am a proud owner of two very beautiful Bengal kittens, Sumi is almost 11 months old and Koji is 16 weeks. Ever since I’ve brought home my little Koj man, we’ve been dealing with constant foul smelling diarrhea in both my cats, blood in Koji’s poop and mucous in Sumi’s poop. We’ve been running back and forth to the vet testing and treating every single type of parasite and infection we could think of… nothing is working and all the tests have come back negative. Research on some forums and I went into my vet and discussed the likelihood it could be tritrich. My vet informed me it’s a very contagious parasite, with symptoms of frequent diarrhea and blood or mucous in stool. “Great, let’s treat for it!” Well, it’s not that simple, the drug to treat it (Ronidazole) can cause cancer in humans and in high doses, the drug can cause seizures and neurological symptoms in the cat during the course of taking the drug. Welp. So we’re testing this now.

The ask… have any of you Bengal lovin’ people had experience with this drug? Have you noticed lifelong affects? How about the age, if it comes back positive, recommendations on waiting to treat my little Koj until he is bigger and stronger?

If you haven’t heard of this virus but are in the same boat and don’t know why your little furry friend is pooping liquid, I highly recommend you discuss this parasite with your breeder or vet. Many members here have experienced what you're going through. And the drug Ronidazole is the ONLY drug that can treat this. Several months ago, one had to quarantine her two cats at the vet in order to get rid of the parasite. There was constant cross contamination and could not get rid of the beast.

With ANY drug, there are side effects and possible complications. You have to decide if they outweigh getting rid of TF. Your poor kitties aren't happy having to deal with this. I do know that these members managed to get rid of the parasite. Make sure your breeder knows about the TF and she needs to have her cats tested and treated. It is highly doubtful that Sumi was the problem as long as she is an indoor cat.
