Personally, I wouldn't get anymore tests done on Clyde, I put Ziggy through the mill and nearly watched him die, what for, just to get a clinical diagnose, and for the vet to right up a new article on him. I vowed never to do that again to any of my cats.

Please persuade your vet for the steroids, the reason that they don’t give them out at the start before they carry out any investigations is that the steroids mask the symptoms.

Ziggy has been steroid free for years now and he will be seven in a week’s time.

Poor Ziggy how very sad - it sounds like he has a very loving mummy in you and your doing all the right things.

Best of luck - Gordon

I have a question. I have a 10 month old male bengal showing all the same symptoms, sudden loss of power in rear legs, constipated very low activity. He still eats and drinks blood work came back perfect and X-rays only showed his constipation. For those of you that have treat for polyneuropothy what were the doses and how long did you treat with the steroids before stopping? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

Ziggy was on 5mg oral twice a day.

Ziggy hasn't had a relapse for a considerable time, which is great.

Just wanted to let everyone know that there is hope out there, even if at sometimes there seems to be none.

Colin

Our 11 month old Bengal boy Satai recently fell foul of this ghastly condition. It progressed over the period of a fortnight from a reluctance to jump through to total paralysis of his back legs and tail. (His tail dragged like a chain.) He became moderately constipated, and had started to affect his front legs. It was truly awful. At the illness' nadir we feared he might not make it to his first birthday.

We noticed his altered behaviour and raised the alarm very early on (we thought it might be first signs of dysplasia) and went through several specialists before tracking down a vet neurologist (didn't even know they existed!), and whilst we were unwilling to submit the poor boy to a nerve biopsy diagnosis was able to be confirmed by way of nerve conduction tests under anaesthesia. Prednisolone was prescribed (0.8mg twice daily for a fortnight, then tapering back).

The first faint signs of improvement came 2 days later with his ability to drag himself up onto a low plinth, and 6 weeks later I'm delighted to report that Satai has made a complete recovery. He lost an awful lot of muscle tone/bulk and that's taking it's time returning but he's completely back to normal, with full leaping ability and activity levels. (whether this is entirely a GOOD thing is open to debate:) )

Will it return? we honestly don't know, and neither does the Neurologist. He considers it unlikely but there is a relative dearth of studies on this condition so we can't be sure.
Hopefully if it does we can jump on it early and nip it in the bud.
None of his siblings have experienced this: we're just lucky I guess.

Still, here is a positive outcome in what is an awful, awful illness.
Here's a shot with his Burmese brother when he was badly afflicted: they're very close, and Sal was very supportive and affectionate.

And this is him now :)

So this disease CAN have a happy ending:)

Callan, thank you for sharing your experience with this. Happy things are going well now. There are specialists for cats and dogs, just like humans -- cardiologists, neurologists, ophthalmologists, etc. It is wonderful to have these great veterinarians.

Thanks Sherry, it is wonderful indeed. The neurologist was based in a university until recently before embedding himself at a large veterinary practice. Oh, there was an error in my previous post: 0.8ml, not 0.8mg.
We would have been devastated to have lost Satai. We were cautioned about bullying behaviour with Bengals but although he is a naturally boisterous boy there not a negative bone in his body.

Hi all! I am new to the forums and I have an eight month old Bengal who is recovering from a nasty bout of this conditions. Same symptoms as the ones that have been described on here I just wanted to tell everyone that I chose not to go the steroid way. I figure it has taken longer for Lestat to recover but he is doing very well. I would say 80% It has been two months since he was at his worse.so there is hope for recovery naturally.i will continue to post here to let you know if there are any relapses>

Glad you found this old post and, hopefully, you read through all the messages. Every cat owner does what they think is best for their cat, but I would weigh the recommendation from your vet carefully. My Raiden is on 0.38 ml of prednisone daily for IBD and it has stopped the vomiting and he has gained 6 pounds since May. He needs to lose a couple of pounds now and we may lower the dosage in the future. But it has helped him a lot.

Hey All - now in 2019 reaching out because our little boy Billy (1.5 yrs old) is as described in these posts, aside from apetite, he is being good about eating.

Took him to the ER vet last night and they did Xrays - found nothing. They wanted an MRI and spinal tap but we said no and wanted to monitor him. They had him on pain meds all night and today he seems a lot better, just still I find myself thinking that bed rest and pain meds to reduce inflammation don't make sense for him...

Reading all these posts make me believe the best rest and pain meds are masking the issue.

Has anyone here had their bengal on pain meds where he was walking better again and acting pretty normal? Does it mask the issue? Or should we still see a problem. Please note that he was still walking when we noticed he was standing oddly and not wanting to get up and move around or jump, the pictures of Zeke I think I saw on the earlier threads are very similar to what we saw, knees pointed inward and trouble with moving them.

Thank you to any advice and it's so inspiring and comforting to see so many of you find success with the steroid treatment!!

Tiffany, I'm not sure how many members will find this topic. We don't have a lot of members posting regularly any more. I hope you found earlier posts in this topic helpful. Vets are always wanting to do additional testing, which can be extremely expensive and not necessarily show the problem. I'm sure there are good articles online and you might want to search for them. Good luck with Billy.

Thank you Sherry, I know it’s a long shot but I had to see if anyone would respond about the pain meds. Our boy is like 90% back to normal and there aren’t actually a lot of details out there On this disorder yet.

Thank you again for replying and I appreciate the support.

Please continue to post and ask questions. This condition is something I am not familiar with and it doesn't appear to be a common issue in cats. There are vets specializing in neurology that you might want to see -- your normal vet gets educated on various conditions, but a specialist has additional education in that one specialty. They aren't cheap, but they do know their specialty.

Hi Tiffany,

I started the thread on Bengal Polyneuropathy. Ziggy is fine now, he is no longer on meds and hasn't been for a long time now. Please do not let them do biopsies on your cat. I nearly lost Ziggy to the biopsies.
Ask your vet for meds and steroids. These will make help. Ziggy was on and off them for around 12 months taking them if and when he had a relapse which is quite common.
I ask the vet why did they not give Ziggy the meds prior to the biopsies? I was told that they would have corrupted the diagnosis. Felt like the Vet college just wanted another piece of literature that they could publish on this disorder, which indeed they hane.

Please read through the thread. There is very promising information on there from individuals who have went through this with their furry friends.
