Luxating Patella

Hi

My boy, Hendrix, was diagnosed last week as having loose kneecaps (luxating patella). They are both loose, but the left is worse than the right, and it is the left that is causing him problems. We are currently monitoring him to see what grade his problem is, and whether or not he will require surgery.

Hendrix will receive whatever treatment he requires of course as I hate to see him in pain. I just wondered if I should let the breeder know? I understand this is something Bengals can be prone to but not sure if it is something a breeder can do anything about.

Our boy had to have an operation on both knees, his left leg was the first and worst leg to cause problems followed shortly after by the right. :sad:

When it first started he was around 9 months old and we had to monitor him but as he got older and heavier it was getting harder for him to walk, so we took him for his first operation as we didn't want it to start wearing away the bone and lesson the chance of a successful out come. 5-6 months later we had his other leg fixed and now he's is fine, you would never know he had anything wrong with him :smile:

Thanks, always good to hear a story with a happy ending! Hendrix hasn't limped since his visit to the vet in September which is odd, but when he went for his booster, his kneecaps were still considered to be loose. I continue to keep an eye on him as if he has further problems I'll take him in for an X-ray. But like I say, he's not limped for a while and he goes berserk after flying frenzy so it's not holding him back any![/quote]

Just keep an eye on him, our boy only limped a few times after it first popped out, still ran around like a crazy thing! :lol:

Best way to keep a check is to watch them from behind when they walk fast/trot. if his knee is popping out you will notice the leg kind of pops to the side.

Thanks for the tip, that's really helpful. I've also been told to keep an eye on any changes in behaviour etc, ie quieter and less active than usual. Maybe I should get him x-rayed regardless, just so we know if he does need an operation or not. I feel a lot less worried now I've heard your story!

Hendrix is having x-rays tomorrow as his knees are giving him problems again. One of them keeps popping out at will it seems. One minute he's trotting around fine, the next he's hobbling and it looks really painful, poor thing. Not aware of any trauma that may have kicked it off so I'm acting quickly as it all started again last night and it was still playing him up this morning, he didn't play at all last night or this morning which is so unlike him.

Both knees and hips will be x-rayed and then the vet will advise if he needs an operation or not. I will hate it if he does need surgery, but better to get it done while he's still young I suppose...

Awww poor Hendrix it does sound painful.

Poor guy

I've known dogs with that issue who had great success with surgery. Of course keeping a cat confined during recovery - especially a Bengal - is probably worse than a dog.

Thank you everyone. I have dropped him off and he isn't happy with me at all! He was walking a bit better today but quite stiff and wasn't playing with Jagger who was bounding with energy this morning. Hopefully we'll know exactly what the situation is later.

Lots of cuddles for him later if he's talking to me!
