Hi all, my poor 1 year old bengal is really ill. I took him to the vets yesterday and he has a temp of 39.9 ("very high") but nothing else she could pick up, no bites or swelling or allergic reactions etc. She gave me antibiotics and anti inflammatories but today he has just been awful - he is really weak, eaten nothing apart from a mouthful of tinned tuna this morning, he's drinking a bit of water but I've tried his normal food, wet food and tuna but he's sniffing it then turning away.

I have phoned the emergency line but I can't take him in tonight, my 4yo is asleep - any suggestions? I will take him o the emergency vet tomorrow but any ideas of anything eh might take to keep him going through the night? His stomach is concave and he's so weak - I'm panicking he wont make it through the night. Im on my own and have no family in London or anyone to sit while i take him in.

Hate to sound callous but I would suggest awakening your 4 year old and taking him to the vet with you. It sounds like your cat is mighty ill to me.

It sounds like he needs to be on an IV at the vets office. Possibly a courrier service could transport him for you? Have you looked into 24 hour vets closer to you? Have you asked the vet office to send someone to pick up your cat? I'm sorry you are in this situation. I wish I could help.

The vet has just called, he's been tested for everything and it's all negative, he's dehydrated but doesn't have pancreatic or liver damage and he's just started eating this evening so he's being discharged tomorrow as the fluids have picked him up brilliantly.

The vet said he tried to "kill her" so he's not in the best of moods but all is well. Very pleased. Just hoping his homicidal mania has passed.

I am so very sorry to hear of this incident. Any time a cat has stopped eating and his lethargic, it's time for a trip to the vet. I find it odd that nothing came back in any test -- blood work, urine sample, stool sample? Cats can get dehydrated and IV fluids become necessary! The key is that your kitty eat! Even if you have to syringe some food into his mouth -- cats must eat or they develop fatty liver disease after 48 hours, which can become fatal if not treated immediately. Drinking water is important, too! I know we sometimes freak out when our babies aren't feeling great -- and you have a 4-year old that needs your attention, too. I am happy to hear that your kitty is doing better. Sometimes they just pick up something -- it happens.

No kitty loves to be at the vet, however, they are used to taking care of aggressive kitties, so this should not have come as a surprise to them. Thankfully, my bengal really behaves himself at the vet.

It's funny that vets take one look at Grace and ask me to hold her down while they take her temp or examin her. Grace is really controlled and careful with her nails and doesn't bite at all. It's sweet Blondie that is like Edward Scissorhands, plus when she gets wound up she nips at my finger nails (in a loving way). She is very sweet and loving, but she doesn't have much control over her nails.

The vet thinks it was gastroenteritis caused by eating someone's thrown out chicken or similar.

Today has been comically bad....I collected the cat from the vets and the train station is next to the council offices, husband got a parking ticket this morning and needed to renew his permit so I popped in to renew so we didn't get more tickets before his return, the office was packed and the queue enormous, the cat was screeching and we waited 30 mins, 2 numbers before ours was due to be called, he did a gastroenteritis poo in his carrier.

We had to leave, quickly.

Then I had to bathe him. Which was fun.

The carrier is in isolation in the back garden. At least its raining.

sometimes you just have to laugh at what life throws at you. It's that or cry! Hope it gets better for you all soon.
