I was wondering if anyone has been unfortunate enough to have this problem? I bought a beautiful kitten in early september, a female for breeding, and a few days later I found that her ears were rather dirty with a build-up of dark wax. I took her to the vets and they said there were a few ear mites in her ears. I was given some drops (Canaural) and some special cleaner. Two weeks later, they were slightly better, so I got some more ear drops. Still no joy.... On a second visit to the vets I was given some stronger ear drops and some small poppettes of oil to treat my queen and the two others. I'm not sure if this is working yet as it was only a few days ago. I feel rather upset about it all as I have to keep messing with the kittens ears (which she is now used to) but does not like at all, it hasnt cleared up, plus the 6 weeks breeders insurance is now over, so Im paying the cost of it all.

Is ear mites a difficult thing to get rid of? The vets told me it is very common in kittens. What also concerns me is that it could lead to other problems or affect her hearing.

I could blame the breeder for selling her with it but at the moment my focus is on her.

We've never had any problems with ear mites, but I would recommend treating all cats in your household just as a precautionary measure!

As your vet says its a common thing not just in kittens but also adult cats.....I take it that your not very happy with your breeder at the moment!

Personally I would be livid with them but thats not going to get you anywhere fast.....But they do need to be informed of this situation regardless of your feelings just to ensure it gets nipped in the bud and no other cats are affected.

Also you say that your breeders insurance has run out now.....You should really have a policy for your queen, I know its expensive but ultimately worth in case your girl develops problems during labour as vet bills for any emergency treatment will be sky-high!

Anyhow keep on with the treatment and more importantly keep your cool when you speak to the breeder......I can't imagine they'll do anything though apart from maybe defend themselves.....Just out of curiosity who actually bred her? (send a pm if you don't want to name them on here)

I have discovered an amazing product callled 'Thornit' for ear mites. A breeder friend recommended it to me and gave me some plus instructions. My kitty's ears are now virtually clear A vet developed the formula for it about 100 years ago (although it is not on prescription).
It has no antibiotics in, and unlike the drops I have had does not upset the cat when you put in on.

The leaflet I have explains how the mite can be picked up in grass where foxes have been. My bengals dont go out loose near the fields in fact (only on a harness at the moment). So I'm pretty sure where my girl got it.

However, since I know firsthand how distressing it can be to treat, I hope my experience is of benefit to other bengal owners.
