Seeking a Productive Flea Product

Hello: I take my two-year-old Bengal boy outside for a twenty to thirty minute walk two to three times a day. Now I saw the show on television a couple of weeks back related to some very poor flea collars on the market and how they have been leaving severe rashes around the neck of many cats. Some of these collars include brand names like Hertz for one.
So my question is can any cat lovers recommend a productive product, non-harmful of course, on the market to prevent fleas from taking up residence on my cat?

We use Frontline Plus on the cats and the dogs. I've had very good success with it.

When I first moved to TX I discovered that my roommates dog and cat had fleas but by the time I found them my dog and cats had them too :rolleyes:

I started the Frontline (once a month) and within a day my animals didn't have any fleas on them any more.

We tried Advantage a few months ago because the Frontline was sold out and it didn't work as well for us as the Frontline does.

Geez thanks for that info Donna. It is most appreciated and can this be purchased at most pet stores? Is it a spray?

I use broadline in the UK. You need to get it from vets. It does everything - fleas, worms, ticks etc. I think I did read though someone's cat having a reaction to it on this forum? I guess there will be reactions by a small minority of cats to all different products and you just have to try and hope for no reaction. Every time I put it on Oscar it does scare me because of the chemical concoction I am pouring onto his skin :sad:

Why can't fleas just disappear?

I use Frontline Plus on Raiden. There are recipes out there for home-made products but I'm not sure how great they work. Raiden does not have fleas and the ticks don't get on him. I get the ticks -- he doesn't! There are so many products on the market place that you simply need to find the best one that will work for your cat. I had to have a flea AND tick product because we back up to woods and ticks are prevalent here and so hard to get off cats.

I don't use anything. But if you had recurring problems with fleas, I could see why you would.

I didn't generally use anything unless I caught a flea on Merlin. For 5 years not a single one, then last winter an infestation after a new cat appeared in the garden full of gravid (egg laden) females! Poor baby had about 30 removed in one hit with the fine flea comb! I now use Advocate - Probably every 3-4 months. This seems to keep him flea free. He did have a tick a few years ago, so I bought the proper tick puller, and (touchwood) haven't needed to use it since... and he got some a/b from the vet cos it was on the fur immediately above his spine!

Flea infestations are the hardest to get rid of, so you really want to stop one before it starts. Humans can carry fleas on them into a home. Those little boogars bite hard and are a real pain in the butt!
