thanks everyone.
the following is going to be me venting so feel free to ignore.
well, i have to say I'm a little disenchanted with Luca's vet at the moment. The medicine hasn't really seemed to take effect. there was one day where his stools were thicker and more shaped but not solid, though he went a lot less. now he is back to his explosive diarrhea.
from my understanding, panacur is usually a 10 day affair. the vet however, only gave me 5 days to take home, saying to let them know how it goes. so today is his last day and there are still no drastic improvements so i called the vet to ask for more syringes for him. and they said he may need an extension on it but first i have to bring in another stool sample to have it tested for giardia again. this means dropping $75 AGAIN, and waiting 3-4 days AGAIN just to get the medicine for something that i know and that the vet knows he already has!!!!!
Am i being irrational or is that a money grab?? I mean, he has already tested positive for it less than a week ago. And more important than the dollar amount, my baby needs his medicine
whats the point in stopping his medicine for 4 days just to put him back on it? i don't know how similar giardia is to human maladies, but usually when you stop medicine before completing the entire dosage and start up again, immunity to the medicine happens. Plus, poor Luca cannot be enjoying constant diarrhea. he even looks like he is in pain when he goes. he closes his eyes and cries
i just want him to have his medicine and be better.
i told my breeder about it and she said to try going to a farm supply store and getting the meds that way but I'm not sure about that plus i have no idea where i would find something like that in vancouver. i wish they would have just given me the full 10 days form the beginning.
anyways, I'm going to challenge giving the vet another stool sample but if they insist, i guess ill have to comply. either way, i want to pull my hair out right now!! i think this type of thing is characteristic of vets though. for instance; when i first got luca, i wanted to take him to a vet within the first couple days of having him, just to make sure everything was okay after his flight and all.even though he was inspected at the airport twice (once in the states, once in canada) before i could take him home. what would have been a $80 bill for an initial health exam turned out to be over $200 bill when i left. because of course they wanted to run blood tests. then when he swallowed a large piece of string they told me to bring him in immediately just to tell me to take him home and watch him...but of cours ei had to pay for another examination fee for them to tell me something they could have told me over the phone without seeing him. then when i took his stool sample in originally, it was supposed to be $50 but once again, of course they wanted to run other tests on it as well so i walked out of there paying $75. I am not a cheap person by any means ( i paid $4000 for this cat for darned sakes) but I'm not very happy with the vet right now.
it's tough because you want to do everything right for you pet but you also don't appreciate being taken advantage of! sort of puts you in between a rock and a hard place. though probably 10 times out of 10 you have to cave and just pay the money to take all precautions for your little fur baby.
sigh...anyone else experience anything like this with their vets?? maybe its a canadian thing ahhahaah
anyhoo, vent accomplished.
