Today we were heading out the door, and we noticed Sammie frantically pawing at the carpet like she was trying to cover something up. So we looked, and on some paper on the floor there was a mess of runny brown stuff with some chunks in it that looked like the pouch food I gave her last night. Sammie had put a plastic bag over the mess, too. My boyfriend sniffed it to see what it was, and it had no odor so we assumed she threw up.

So I get back from errands and I've been sitting here on the computer, when I noticed Sammie once again pawing at the floor. I go over and there's a small spot of runny brown stuff on the carpet. We have white carpet so I ran and got the cleaner quickly, and the mess came up no problem.

Now I am a bit confused... I didn't hear her making vomiting sounds... unless she did it when I stepped out for a few minutes. So is it diarrhea? It has no smell what so ever, but Sammie sure is stressing out about "covering" it up, even now after it's all cleaned up.

The only thing weird in her diet is a gave her a beef & rice pouch last night. Usually she'll have chicken, and for the past few weeks/month she's been getting Greenie treats. The mystery substance looks like the beef pouch... but then again, all wet cat food looks like diarrhea to me

Just a little worrisome, because we leave this coming Thursday for 2 weeks, and Sammie is staying home with a sitter, and I don't want her pooping/puking everywhere, and time is a bit tight. The vet is not open tomorrow either.

Any ideas while I wait for the vet on Monday?

I'm no expert but I can't imagine either of my Bengals having any sort of diarrhoea that didn't smell so I think it's probably vomit. Maybe the different meat content in the beef pouch last night has caused a reaction. If so, then I wouldn't think it would last long - if she's vomitted twice then she's probably got rid of most of it. Keep an eye on her until you can get her to the vet, make sure she's got plenty of water and avoid any more beef pouches!

Yeah, poop is smelly! and if I am not smelling anything...

Logic tells me vomit, but I haven't heard anything. But like I said, I did step out for a few minutes after I got back home.

I closed off the bathroom and bedroom so she can't make everything messy, and she has her dry food and water out. It was the one and only beef pouch, so there's no more of it. I surely hope it's not the treats, because she loves them.

I've just never seen a cat cover their vomit, or obsessed over where it was. That's why I thought it was diarrhea.

I am watching her, and probably will keep an eye out for messes and sounds. Hopefully it clears up... I don't want to board her as that's expensive and stressful to her and I, but I don't want messes left for two weeks on my white carpet, either (damn my apartment for having white carpet, dammit!)

As I type, she's eating some of her dry food, which I take is a good sign.

I guess it's quite possible for her to vomit quietly if it's a sudden, reflex reaction to the food. They're more likely to heave and make a noise with something like furballs which are an irritant. Like I say, if it was only one pouch and she's brought most of it back up, then hopefully her tummy will settle now. Has she eaten anything else since?

She just ate a bit of her dry food, and now she's trying to climb the curtains

She's acting normal, although a bit shy around the spot where she made her mess.

That's a good sign and would suggest it's a reaction to the food rather than a bug which would make her under the weather. Still probably worth getting her checked by the vet on Monday though.

that definately sounds like vomit, & as she's been having the treats a while it was probably more likely that the beef pouch was the culprit  . mine tend to try & cover up any accidents they've had & seem quite obsessive over it too.

as ginny said, they don't always do the heaving when they vomit...that's more when they're having trouble bringing it up (what a lovely topic of conversation this is  ).

just keep an eye on her, but it sounds like she has probably got rid of what was irritating her if she's eating again. make sure she doesn't get dehydrated, as with vomiting they can dehydrate quickly. pinch the skin at the back of the neck...if it springs straight back into place then she is ok, if it takes longer to go back in to place she may be dehydrated.

Thank you everyone! I am just such the paranoid mommy when it comes to Sammie :) And it's just stressful when I am already stressed due to leaving in a few days.

Was this the first time you fed her beef? Some cats have trouble digesting beef or lamb if they're not used to it.
