Hi all,

We have a three year old ex-stud boy who we have had for just over a year now. Before we collected him, he was neutered and the breeder explained that he would probably go on to put a little bit of weight on due to the lack of testosterone, and sure enough he does seem to have developed a few extra rolls and a little belly over the past 6 months or so! We took the decision to keep him indoors as he has never known anything different, so obviously he isn't getting as much exercise as other outdoor cats. We also feed him Royal Canin indoor cat food to keep the calories down, but just wondered if anybody had any tips or advice on how to get him back into shape?

How about an exercise wheel? There are some people on here who say their cats love them.

Running a laser pen up and down the stairs could also a great way to get your boy in shape - my two love this and run about like pure lunatics lol x

Increase the exercise a bit and cut the food.
If he is settled on Royal Canin, it is best not to change his food too drastically but RC also do a "Light" option and I doubt he would notice much difference, but it will reduce his calorie intake without him feeling very hungry.

IMO there are a few things that you could do:

1) Change food to something that has more protein and less carbs. Carbs promote overweight.

2) If you feed him free choice, then you should start to limit the amount. And maybe try to use cat food mazes (to slow down food intake). There are a lot of different types:









3) Try to promote more exercise: play with a cat, throw treats and make him run after them, exercise wheel, etc.

Currently we feed him 1 wet pouch in the morning (Felix As Good As it Looks), and then just 1 bowl of dry Royal Canin in the evening. And that's it! When we picked him up I was surprised at how little we were instructed to feed him, but not sure if that is standard practice with bengals? He weighs about 6kg's, so he's not the smallest cat in the world...

The maze toys look good, especially in keeping him occupied whilst we are out at work so think they are definitely a good shout and will look to get him one.

In terms of playing with him, we've found over the past few months he seems to have lost a little bit of his playfulness and he isn't as interested as he once was in string, paper, boxes, etc. But not sure if that is his age or maybe a lack of exciting toys on offer! Any tips on the best toys are much appreciated, I've tried him on a few 'mice' that contain catnip but he doesn't seem that bothered.
