Hello, I am new around here. I have a kitten who was due for another set of kitten vaccinations. I did a lot of reading up and watched videos and decided to try vaccinating at home. I have not been happy with any of my local veterinarians. I used the FVRCP 3 way vaccine. Per online and website instructions, I gave the vaccine in the right front leg beneath the elbow. The kitten was not impressed and even with my partner helping to hold him, the shot was not very successful. Only about half, maybe less, of the vaccine made it into the kitten. The rest of it was accidentally injected nowhere. I thought the needle was inside the skin and trying to make it quick, checked for blood and then began pushing the syringe. It was not in the skin and the vaccine leaked down the kittens arm. I quickly corrected and was able to get the rest in correctly. I think that was my first mistake. I should have just disgarded the remaining amount instead of administering it. I regret that very much. I have also learned that home vaccinations are not good unless you have experience. I will be taking the kitten to the vet from now on.

That all being said and done, since my kitten only received half of the vaccine dose, should I just wait until the next set is due and have the vet correctly adminsiter it then or should I take him now to have it correctly administered again? I am deeply regretful of this choice and will not be doing it again. Thank you for any advice.

I would wait until the next dose is due, you don't want to over vaccinate.

Also keep an eye on that leg, I had a puppy once that had swelling the one time I gave the booster in the leg. I had always done them subcutaneous in the past and after that I went back to doing them that way.

Thank you! I ended up calling a vet and was advised to go ahead and vaccinate again... I made an appointment but I'm so torn because I feel like it will over vaccinate him and then I also feel like the vet knows best...

My vet gives me antibiotics to inject at home for my boy, but only after he had seen me do several injections at the surgery first. This is simply because Merlin HATES going in the box and would have needed trips to the vet every other day for an eye injury last year. The stress of the travelling would have caused more problems than me doing the jabs at home, along with the 8 eye drops a day, and various other treatments.

Gladly, at the end of the treatment, Merlin retained full use of the eye with no obvious ongoing issues - Unlike another cat recently, who lost its eye because the owners found two eye drops a day to much lie hard work....

I do take him annually for his boosters and check-up, irrespective of being happy to do sub-cut jabs myself, as my vet still likes to see him (and hear him...) Personally, I think the vet has a mean streak towards me as he adores Merlin..... who sprays me when putting him in the basket!

I had a cat who became diabetic and the vet instructed me on how to administer the insulin. When she went into renal failure, they taught me how to administer the subq fluids. This was never something I could have tackled myself without their instruction. I leave the vaccinating to the professionals. I hate needles and hate poking and pricking my poor kitty. Unfortunately, we had her put to sleep after 17 wonderful years.
