Hi Everyone

New member looking for advice from those who have had bengals far longer than I.. I've never had a sick kitten before (18 years of owning cats) so this is distressing for me and I'm sure my furry face as well.

Here's the timeline of what's going on.

I pick up my kitten at 10 weeks first weekend of october. She had never had a solid stool, Late november she has blood and mucus in stools, and was also "leaking", leaving poop spots wherever she sat. We go to the vet, she's diagnosed w/ Giardia & treated with Panacur / Fenbendazole. After panacur regimen problem "solved" No more leaking, no more blood or mucus, but still no solid stools.

Early december, she starts leaking again and occasional blood in stool. We go to vet again, neg for giardia; she is treated anyway w/ metronidazole. Problem "solved" again, she didn't leak or have issues until the past two days.

Yesterday, leaking again w/ occasional bloody streak & mucus in stools.

I've tried multiple foods during all this, started out on friskies wet food - made her worse. Friskies kitten dry food - allergic, face swelled up. Iams kitten food - She enjoyed this, but problem not resolved. Four Health All Stages - She enjoys this but problem not resolved.

After all this and she's been negative for giardia, I'm wondering if she might have a food allergy?
OR
She might have TF (Which I just found out this existed from this great site)

So we have a vet appt this weekend and i'll be sure to update y'all with results.

Too Long Didn't Read: Kitten has had diarrhea w/ occasional mucus & blood for 4 months, treated twice unsuccessfully: Does she have TF or am I feeding her a bad food?

I agree. The smell is horrific with TF (my 2 had this and thankfully all ok now after treatment with Ronidazole).

I'm surprised your vet hasn't mentioned this possibility to you. Perhaps he is one of the vets that haven't heard of it before. You need to print off the info on here on TF and take to your vet with s 3 day pooled poop sample refrigerated in between sampling and ask he sends off for the QPCR test for TF (Langford Labs in Bristol is one place that tests). This is assuming you are in the UK!

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Bengaldaddy

You are right, of course - 14 days OFF abs before sampling for TF. However, if I read the initial post correctly, the abs were given beginning of December so should now have cleared his system.

Definitely sounds like TF though doesn't it?

I'll just say that TF isn't really a new thing really. I treated all 4 of my cats for it 3 years ago... it was still kind of new then but there was still an awareness of it amongst pet owners and breeders.... vets do not seem to have caught up at all.... The odd one is very good, then you get some who know about it but believe it's rare so don't test for it as a rule, then there are a fair few who don't know what it is!!!

Sounds very much like TF to me... i'm guessing you are not UK based, but not 100% sure. Practices do differ greatly from country to country... worth noting that it is believed that TF came to the UK from the US as it has been around there much longer....

I am beginning to think my kitten has this too :( I just got my kitten a week ago. He is 5 months old. When I brought him home he had the worst gas and you could actually feel him farting while sitting on your lap. The smell was horrific. Then he pooped (on my bed) and it was super soft with dark blood that was actually dripping from his butt. Again, the smell was horrific. I took him to the vet a few days later and told him about the symptoms and he thought he had colitis. He prescribed him some antibiotics for 5 days and some different food. I am noticing that the blood is gone but the stools are still very soft and stinky. He told me that if it wasnt better to call him and we would do a stool sample to check for other things. I am also noticing that he seems overly hungry all the time. When he eats, he scarfs it down like he was starving. He drinks a lot of water too.

Guess its time to make another trip to the vet.

They reckon dry food can cause kidney problems. Sure someone with more knowledge on this forum will clarify further

How did it go? Did you find out if it is TF or Giardia?
