yes, i think a phonecall to your own vet just for advice would be a good idea, & if possible, as already suggested...going along with the breeder & the kitten to their vet to hear first-hand.

the $100 deposit you paid does sound fair to cover his vaccinations & upkeep while he has been with the breeder.

looks like there is a surgical option to expand the eosophagus but it's very complicated, would probably involve multiple surgeries & would be very costly. insurance wouldn't cover as he already has the condition before being insured.

you need to find out if he is severe or not & if he is retaining the nutrients he needs from food before vomiting. if he is getting all he needs, & it's just a case of cleaning up after him then i don't see a problem but i think you need to find out as much as you can in case this is going to be an ongoing problem where he may need extensive veterinary treatment to replace fluids/nutrients. also, what kind of diet will he need? there is a lot to consider when taking on any special needs pet & you really need to be sure of what you are getting in to.

having said all that, i really hope you can have him! it's difficult to place poorly ones so it's wonderful you are considering the option

The surgical procedure is VERY expensive due to the tiny surgical equipment that they would use.

There was a similar (if not identical) case with a Bengal kitten a few years back that I knew. This lovely couple had a litter of 4 kittens, and the female had the same problem of vomiting after eating. They had to take her to the RVC as she needed specialist care. The operation on her oesophagus would have cost in excess of £2000 and was very risky anyway as she was so young, so they reluctantly made the decision to have her put to sleep when she was 4 months old. It was so very sad, and in fact a film crew were at the RVC that day, and their sad experience was shown on channel 4. This is why I urge you to get a proper veterinary opinion

I sympathise with the position that you are in here I know exactly what I would do, as I have already done a similar thing. I fell totally in love with the runt of a litter of five from the first time I saw him, even before we were considering buying another kitten. He had to be partially hand reared and was really small, but he was such a character and oh so cute! To cut a long story short, he has been in and out of the vets since we brought him home, and we daren't tally the exact amount, but think we have spent roughly £1000 in vet fees since June 07. He has a certain form of anaemia, which required steriods, vomits alot, which has been confirmed as part of the anaemia, is prone to infections and struggles to maintain weight. This is just the tip of the iceberg of his problems. Having said all that, he is the most lovely, cute, still small, affectionate, loyal (to whoever feeds him lol) little character, and I couldn't bear to be without him.
Try and find out as much as possible about the kittens condition and prognosis, and be prepared to pay out at the vets. But there are many positives that could also come out of this difficult situation.
