3 yr old bengal successfully treated for IBD with prednisone injections.. Now stable and eating pea and venison canned food from RX royal canin. Today I read that if your cat RUNS to the litter box after eating or drinking then suspect diabetes. I have known that there is a huge amount of clumps in the litter box.. With the running to the box, i think diabetes is probably here. Of course, I will have a specialist check my cat. My question is. might a food change be in order. I read that for diabetes, low carb and hi protein.. with the ibd. I've been feeding pea and venison. not sure when going in the cat box, so all vets come to the home. I'm thinking home testing? I have peg insurance so cost is not an object. I read about crystals to detect glucose in the litter?

I think you are getting way ahead of yourself. Testing for diabetes just requires a pretty simple blood test. If you are worried about it, just go get the test done. It should be quick and easy to do. Then you can worry about all that other stuff. Running to the litterbox after a meal consistently could probably be a lot of things.

My girl ALWAYS goes to her box after she eats, I think it's more of a habit than anything! She is perfectly normal(if there is such a thing haha) and she doesn't have diabetes! I think she has "trained" herself to use the box at that time! She has a routine and I always
KNOw when she is about to go.

It takes a blood test to check for diabetes...The other symptons are weight loss and drinking a lot of water. If you are noticing that, it may be worth asking your vet to do a blood draw. If the cat is ok, at least the vet will have a baseline for the future.

My older cat (19 years old) is a diabetic. She was always pretty tiny, and started to eat quite a bit more, and crying cause she wanted more of her wet food. I also noticed that their water bowl was always needing to be filled and of course a huge amount of urine in the litter box. She had lost weight, and I was so worried, that when I brought her to the vet, it was almost a relief to find out it was diabetis.
We started right on Purina DM dry food, but I have recently switched to mostly wet food with a higher protein. I pretty much switch her wet food, as she will not eat the same food twice. Anyway, she gets a shot twice a day, and is doing really well. She is up to 8 pounds and my vet I so happy. I don't test her sugars myself, as the home kit was kind of expensive and I have her checked when I bring her to the vets.
