I'm hoping that somebody can give us a little bit of advice.

I took Magic and Merlin to the vets yesterdays because they were both sneezing with runny noses and Merlin had sore eyes.
We were given anti-biotics and eye gel.
Merlin did have loose stools before hand which he had been to the vet with last week and they are sending off stool sample etc.
Now we have two kittens that have got the serious runs. Could this be a side effect of the anti-biotics?

It just seems like we take a step forward then two back, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dawn,

Some antibiotics can cause loose stools especially in kittens unfortunately. I would 'starve' the wee ones overnight (what doesn't go in can't come out ), and then feed them a bland diet of boiled chicken/white fish for a couple of days. After this introduce their regular food back gradually.

Have the kittens been wormed recently? I am sure your vet will have checked for the common internal parasites and the stool samples will also show if worms are present.

There are some good probiotic pastes available too; very good for upset tummies. 'Pro-Kolin' is a good one A little teaspoon of live yoghurt can also help to settle a poorly tummy

I do hope your little ones recover quickly; let us know how they get on!

Ooh, I forgot to say....

Do make sure the babies are drinking lots of water. Kittens can become dehydrated VERY quickly if they have loose stools. If they don't seem to be drinking their normal intake, then syringe some water down them or use a teaspoon. (always handy to have a plastic syringe around with young cats )

Thanks for that we seem to be doing all the things you said. Yes they have been wormed on a regular basis and the Vet perscribed Pro-Kolin last week and wormer a few days before.

They are lively enough and drinking plenty its just that they have had bad tummies more so since the antibiotics.

We feel so helpless, but hopefully we will get through it with them, looks like the antibiotics has got rid of their colds though.

they should sort out within a couple of days dawn, sounds like you're doing everything right. the boiled chicken or white fish usually does the trick.

Upset tummies and diarrhea are common side-effects of antibiotics, in humans as well as pets. The antibiotics kill the beneficial gut bacteria, causing a bit of digestive trouble. Usually things go back to normal a short while after treatment ends as the gut is re-colonized by bacteria. You can try to help the process along with probiotics.

Hi Dawn, I am fairly new here and I feel I don’t know enough to give you advice, but I had similar problem so I just wanted to share the outcome.

Both of my kittens suddenly got diarrhoea about 2 weeks ago. Straight away I started feeding them steamed chicken and fish (alternating), but after couple of days they started begging for food, so I started mixing chicken/fish with dry Science Plan (which they were on beforehand). After about a week, their stool was still very soft and then one day Benga threw-up her food. I took them both to the vet and they were given Prokolin and antibiotics. The sample of their stool was sent to the lab and I am waiting for results.
In mean time (following the breeder’s advice) I bought Royal Canin (Waltham) Sensitivity Control diet, SC31(apparently, breeders swear by it) and started mixing it with chicken or fish. I can say that after about 4-5 days on that, we were very happy having to scoop up the little chipolata sausages.
Now they are back on Science Plan, as SC31is not a kitten food and they would not be able to get all necessary nutrients from it, but I still have some left and if the same problem arises, I will switch their food until they get better.

Hope your kittens are already better and please, let us know what comes back regarding their stool result.

Anyway pleased to say that the boys are on the road to recovery had a nasty cold and tummy virus
