Hi everyone,

Yesterday was the due date for my two`s operation. Everything went good as my vet. told me by telephone this morning, and no complication post-op either.

I was wondering, with everyone here being around the globe, what is your vet. take on pain medication after the operation? Do they give any? Mine doesn't give any unless the cat is over 10pounds or having an amputation of the claws. Seems rather cruel as i well recall my last visit to the hospital, and i couldn't get pain med soon enough to quell my pain after the operation.

Should i request any when i go back to pick them up? For a boy the incision is far less(though i cringe to think if it be done to me ) pronounced than for a girl's operation. I'd really like to know what is your personal opinion on this!

Usually a painkiller injection is done during or right after the OP . I know at school that for females we did one more injection 4 hours after waking up but that was horrible : they were usually still a bit under ketamine influence and completly mad at us , we had to fight to give that injection and I'm not sure they wouldn't have been better left alone... (now when working you don't do that, but also you don't spend half an hour looking for the ovaries and moving organs this way and that ! ).

Anyway we only did one injection for males, even at school , and no worries ^^ (it was morphine at school and now we usually give AINS like tolfenamic acid but the effect is still ok ).

Painkillers are only given later as tablets when the animal has undergone a really painful OP (bone surgery for eg.). That's also when we give morphine during the OP...

your comments put my mind at ease. My only experience with big ops are on myself and a few women i know who had either c-section or worse. Couldn't bare the thought of them going through something like this without something to take the edge off.

Both seem to be ok, although Keman starts crying loudly when i leave his sight! Shana on the other hand, has been really quiet and stays hidden. Both are off their feeding habits. They left almost half the usual patty they get as supper.

All in all, they seem ok!
