I'm so sorry Katie for you and poor Indy to have to go through that!

I've read the stories of a few cats who have died from HCM and it isn't always just a case of a seemingly healthy cat just randomly passing away suddenly, they all suffered terribly before they died it's heartbreaking. I wonder if people who don't screen have ever actually had any experience with or know of cats dying from HCM.

How DO you evaluate if a kitten is from a high risk/no risk line? The breeder I'm interested in posts all pedigree and scan info on her site, copies of them, so viewing those documents isn't a problem.

I've found it quite hard to do for my two, I looked on both the HCM negative and possitive list and looked through my girls pedigree but I'm still not 100% what risk they are. One of my girls has 2 cats in her pedigree that are the parents to 2 cats on the positive list but the list only gives the name of the sire and not the mother. The sire of a positive cat on the list is in my girls pedigree way back but not the dam and then another cat in her pedigree is the mother of a cat on the positive list (which I found out through looking through the positive cats pedigree) but not the stud, that stud is father to a few other cats on the list so looks like he is the problem but it's impossible to tell. The trouble is there is no way to know which parent cat (could be both) passed on the HCM so although she is supposed to be from lower risk lines I'm not sure if she really is low risk My other girl has no cats on either list so no idea there.

I thought I had done enough research when I got them but now I think I was a bit of an idiot.

I have a general question about working out whether a cat is high or low risk. A couple of posters have said in various threads that they have worked out/been told that their cats are at 50-60% risk, so what would be classed as low risk and what is high? Would 25% be low risk (bearing in mind it's still a 1 in 4 chance), or would it be less than 10%, whats the cut off figure? Is a cat with 50% risk a high risk cat? (I expect each individual will have a personal limit they are prepared to work with but just as a guideline). How do you work out what risk category your cat would fall into? And how do I work out the % risk factor of my cats?
