No, not Mikesch, he's got all his teeth, but I've noticed that my other adopted cat, Binky, is apparently missing one of his upper jaw canine teeth. The other one appears to be in pretty bad condition with the tip broken off. He does not like me prying his mouth open to check his teeth, so it's hard to get a clear picture of their exact condition. Trying to brush his teeth would be absolutely out of question for this old chap.

I'm wondering if I should take him to the vet to have it checked out. I've called the vet where he was taken to previously (since they have all his records) and they told me it's nothing to worry about as long as he is eating fine and doesn't show signs of being in pain. I also learned that according to their records, he is already 10 years old rather than 8 and apparently it's not uncommon for cats that age to start losing their teeth. Going into a carrier, being in the car, and visiting the vet is a lot of stress for Binky, so they felt that unless he's in pain or stops eating it's not necessary for them to see him.

Now I'm wondering: How do I tell whether it is bothering him? He's eating fine with a healthy appetite, both wet and dry food, so that's not a problem. He sometimes sticks his tongue out when relaxing, but he usually purrs when he does that, so I don't think it's a sign of being in pain. I can pet his face without him showing signs of discomfort (as long as I don't try to open his mouth at which point he will fight me and run away). He chases after toys to chew on them and sometimes he'll chew on the edge of a rug or blanket. I've found some stains apparently caused by bloody saliva on my bed covers where he likes to sleep. Mikesch's vet specializes on pet dentistry. I wonder if I should call him for a second opinion, or if I should just ignore it as long as Binky acts normal?

I think you should still bring him to the vet as the cause of him loosing teeth may be "tartre" (I don't know the exact name in english but it's something close so I hope you'll understand...) and gingivitis, and this progress may be stopped by a good cleansing of the teeth by the vet under anaesthesia (hope I got the spelling right).

I'd agree with the advice to get him checked anyway. My previous cat (not a Bengal) had a problem with tartar and had to have it removed under anaesthetic. Bad teeth can lead to infections that can be fatal (not just in cats, in humans too) so it's always better to be on the safe side. It might just be a broken tooth in which case there's probably nothing to be concerned about - they can manage quite happily with several teeth missing - but it's probably worth knowing what the general state of his mouth is like.
