Our Bengal licked funicide that leaked from a container. We spotted it almost at once and tried to wash his paws. We rang the vet who said just to wash his paws and try to get him to drink. He said there would be no long term damage but that his mouth would ulcerate later and be very sore.
Biggles seemed fine and went for his walk and ate prawns but was much worse last night drooling and lethargic.
We rang the emergency vet who just said that is expected and will last a few days. He’s not eating or drinking at all today but has used his litter tray. He looks so ill and miserable we don’t know what to do to help him or if we should take him into the vet.
He hates the car and on his last visit went berserk and tore all his claws off arriving a bloody mess and totally distressed.
We opted for a home visit in January when he had difficulty weeing and the vet diagnosed crystals in his urine and gave him an injection and drops.
We’re so worried and can’t believe this has happened cos I’m so careful not to have any thing dangerous around them. It was a container of funicide mould remover from B&Q that my husband left in the utility room instead of the shed but it had never been opened yet leaked. It was under stuff so we never saw it.
Unfortunately I decided to Spring clean the utility room yesterday and as usual Biggles opted to help me. I moved stuff, turned to put it down and then saw the spill but too late.

Has anyone experienced this type of poison? Any idea how we can help him as he’s not eating or drinking today just sleeping and drooling and looking terrible.

Should we take him into the vet though they said it wasn’t necessary yesterday? Or will that just distress him more? Or arrange a home visit but that could take days.

The active ingredient is Benzalkonium chloride and apparently it’s used in patio cleaners and can remain dangerous for pets if it gets wet i.e. rained on after initial application. It’s also in hand gels which I’d never have guessed.

I can’t offer any specific help about the poison. But for times when I know my cat is very sick, I just get my cat into a carrier and show up on the vets front door. I don’t want my vet to theorize about the state and condition of my cat, I want an examination, and a course of treatment based on that evaluation.

OMG. GET THE CAT TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY!!! That should have been done pronto so they could force the cat to vomit up the poison and start the cat on fluids. Why on earth you would ever just call the vet and the vet offer advice over the phone, I don't know. I don't care how much the cat fights going to the vet, get him there before you lose him! As it is, now the poison has been in his system and it may be too late. If he feeling that sick, he should not fight the carrier as much. But .. what on earth are you waiting for?

I'm sure you never would have waited if this had been a child! This is so serious. I truly hope it's not too late for your kitty. Poor baby. And, now you know to keep things like that completely out of reach of your baby.

I found this on Benzalkonium chloride poisoning. I agree. Get him to a vet in case of renal, cardiac or other issues.

I am watching this thread for an update. Poison will start shutting down organs. Most animal first aid kits will contain something to induce vomiting to get rid of what poison you can, however, it is entering the system almost immediately. Nobody wants to lose a cat to something like this -- and the longer one waits to seek medical attention, the worse the kitty can get. I pray it is not too late for this one.

I am watching for an update here too. Praying for a positive outcome. Love and healing energy.

I understand the concern about the car ride adding huge amounts of stress. Perhaps swaddled in a pillowcase with in a carrier or even just held in a pillowcase could help a stressed out Bengal not hurt itself for a ride to the vet.

I am considering putting my Oberon in a carrier for a ride around the block once in a while so he doesn't overreact when I need to take him to the vet.

My theory at this point is that the cat got dehydrated and developed crystals. Cats dehydrate very quickly when they get sick, and I wish that the first vet had done IV fluids. You will have to keep an eye on this for a while, but probably the crystals issue will go away with better hydration.

Still no word on how this kitty is doing?

I am no vet, but the vet is the first person who should have dealt with this. I sent her a PM asking how the kitten is doing - and have heard nothing in a week, so I am guessing the kitten didn't do well. I should have said that you always READ the label of the poison as that will tell you what should be done -- induce vomiting or not. However, time is of the essence before the poison takes hold and shuts down the organs. I know these accidents happen. I just hate to think this one may have ended tragically.

Unfortunately I can't help coz I haven't experienced that kind of issue but don't worry I'll be praying for his fast recovery. Hope he gets well asap.
