Just wobdering for you guys who breed, how many litters would you have in a year?

I only ask because surely the more you have, the less time you have to spend socialising each little kitten.

When we were picking up our second Bengal who was approaching 16 weeks, the breeder also had 4 other litters on the go ( a fact we did not know until we went to collect) and they had combined 2 litters also - why would you do that?

We've noticed that this second cat is nervous and skittish and isnt well socialised with humans, preferring the company of our other cats - quite, quite different from our first Bengal whi is the typical into everything, following me around etc

My theory is that they have too many cats and cant give them the right amount of attention, handling, socialising although her physical condition was excellent.

Thoughts??

I thought there was a limit of litters with some of the organizations (TICA, Cat Fancier's Association, GCCF), but I'm not finding that information and many state there is no limit. However, if I were a breeder, I would limit a queen to no more than two litters per year. That allows her two months for the pregnancy, two months to nurse and wean her kitties. And two months to recuperate before breeding again. In fact, I would probably limit to one litter per year. My concern would be more for the mother and kittens and not about how many kittens I can sell in a year. A younger queen may do okay with two per year, but the older they get, the harder it is and most queens are retired after 3 to 4 years. You just can't wear them out having and caring for kittens. I'm sure there are some breeders who overbreed their queens.
