Yes I have seen my vet chip several kittens where the chip just come out through the skin and she had to do it again! They dont seem to feel it at all when she does it though thank goodness, even though the needle looks awfully big. The chip on this cat was done several years ago though and has apparently been read loads of times since, although I only have his word of this.

I would be a little suspicious to be honest then....

They move and hide as well but i imagine they can be seen on xray.

If not implanted deep enough it's possible that the chip can be rejected as a foreign body, ultimately growing out. Alternatively, if implanted too deep it can migrate under the skin.

In my experiences most chips migrate a little.

I've never had one fully grow out, although I have had to replace one due to it poking back out of the skin shortly after being implanted.
