Hi to all,
Tia is 10 months old, and on a couple of occastions i have tried her on adult food, and quite frankly she would rather miss a meal than eat it.
So my question is , is it safe to keep her on kitten food or will it make her fat
as she gets older? it seems to have more vitamin content than adult food,
HELP!!!!!

The recommended advice seems to be to keep them on the kitten variety up until 1 year old but that would not solve the problem of Tia not liking the adult variety at all and then what would you do in 2 months time!

Have you tried a mixture of half and half? That is what my breeder was feeding Lubo when I got him albeit since then (on the advice of a forum member and based on the fact he is only 14 weeks old) I have been feeding him kitten only. If you keep to her preferred brand and the one flavour then she may be more likely to give it a try. Let me know how you get on.

I think once they reach a certain age it is better to have them on adult food for the reasons you mention in your post. My moggie has been stealing Lubos food over the past fortnight and seems to have put on weight already (or maybe she just looks huge in comparison to him anyway )

It's not just the weight gain that can cause problems...A kitten’s digestive system works much quicker than that of an adult cat i.e. the amount of time that food remains IN the kittens body is less than that of an adult. To account for this there is a higher percentage of vitamins/nutrients/protein etc added to kitten food so that the kitten gets a chance to adsorb more as it quickly passes through the body.

Prolonged feeding (and by that I think it needs to be years) of kitten food to an adult "could" potentially cause harm by exposing the cat to excessive quantities of vitamins/nutrients/protein etc ...at least that's what I've been led to believe.

Don't worry about Tia not liking adult food...cats aren’t stupid. She may skip a couple of meals, she may even go a couple of days but once she realises theirs no alternative she WILL eat it.

Hi Heidi,
ive been mixing the adult in with the kitten food, and she has been eating it.
She still won't eat the dried, and i'm hoping that when we bring Diego
home and she see's him eating it that she may be tempted to give it a try.
We can only hope

have you tried the raw chicken mince from petsmart? or try lamb mince once in a while
my babies both bengals and non bengals love it
they also have a raw wing each not blanched so as it comes only once in a while as a treat, along side royal canin kibble wether it be baby cat or the new queen34 biscuits,its the same biscuit just a different size.and a sachet of wet goes down but they always go for the mince
with the raw though keep on top of your worming
give it a try!
