Cat treats

Has anybody given tuna out of a can to the cats? I made myself a tuna salad and I gave the left over from the tin to my girls and they LOVED it! I buy tuna in water not in oil. Is it ok as a cat treat?

You should never give human grade tuna to cats, it is high in unsaturated fats which is OK for humans but not for cats, it can cause vitamin E deficiency which causes something called steatitis (yellow fat disease) which is very painful for the cat. Plus tuna has mercury in it which is also dangerous.

You should give them tuna especially for cats as it has added vitamins and minerals like amino acid and taurine.

I've always given some human tuna to my kitties -- every once in a while. The kitties always loved the water from the tuna can. It is not going to kill your cat and I don't see anything wrong with it as an occasional treat -- it's not like you're giving them the entire can -- just a few pieces. It's just a treat every now and then.

I gave Crow a little bit (the tip of my pinky size) of my tuna steak yesterday and he loved it! I know that it should be a once in a blue moon treat, but he seemed to love it. I also eat tuna filets (I cook them like a steak, not from a can), so maybe that's different than canned tuna? Its not precooked, nor is it in oil or water.

All human grade tuna is bad for cats, Google it and see for yourself, after reading it you may think twice, I only give mine tuna pouches especially for cats.

I will read about the tuna online. But is a tuna steak filet ok? I also give them smoked samon every now and then wich they love.

Ok so I have read about it. It is no problem to give canned tuna every now and then and only in a small amount. I read about the mercury in it and about the vitamin d ,but the way I read it its only harmful if you would feed the cat with canned tuna everyday in large amounts.
