I am trying to change my 4 month old kitten over to a healthy food. The breeder had her on Purina One SmartBlend dry/Friskies wet. She has a very sensitive stomach and I have to do this slowly. I thought I had settled on Natural Balance Wild Pursuit dry and wet. She doesn't really care for it, so I thought I'd mix in some Nutro Finicky Feline. Then I met the Weruva rep in the pet store and he explained to me that cats should be on wet food only. So I agreed to try the Weruva. My Sheena loved it, then threw up a bit because I may have given her a little too much and she gobbled it down. She kept it down for the most part. Then I read the can.....only 10% protein!!! How can that be enough? I called the company, but they are gone for the day and will call me back. The Natural Balance Wild Pursuit dry food has 40%. Big difference. But....supposedly they are not supposed to eat dry food???? In nature they eat mice, birds, etc.....all wet. Dry food is full of carbs and fillers, according to the Weruva man. I honestly don't know what to do. My cabinet has the cheap food from the breeder that I'm trying to wean her off of, Natural Balance wet and dry foods, Weruva wet food (they don't make dry). My question.......help??????

10% is of the total weight of the wet food, most of which is water.
40% is of the total dry weight of the food. Undoubtedly no higher total protein than that of the wet.
Also, check the source of protein in each food. I do not know the commercial brands very well, as I feed a totally raw diet but the water content is a lot of the weight of the wet food, as it should be. A cat on dry food makes up the water, in theory, by drinking plenty of water.

Thank you so much for explaining the protein % to me. I really couldn't understand it! I think I'm packing it all up, returning it and buying just Weruva. I read all the info on their website and it is impressive. It does look and smell so good. The Natural Balance has an awful smell to it. I think Sheena vomits because she eats too much at one time. I'm going to try giving her small amounts more frequently. This has been exhausting..I just want the best for my babies. Thank you!

I feed a mix of wet and dry. 1 tiny tin in the morning (UK make canogan very expensive grain free...... I would eat it myself) dry canogan at lunchtime - grain free dry meant to be good for teeth but Oscar swallows and does not crunch so teeth do not get the benefit anyway. 1 more tin at tea time. I think I have covered most benefits by feeding a mix. People talk about cats only eating meat but as someone pointed out - on this forum I think - cats in the wild eat rodents etc which eat grains, fruits and carbs, so they will ingest a little of these food stuff by eating their prey. However I know they leave the intestines so do they ingest it???? It's all so confusing but try and buy the best. I also feed a mix so that if I am out for the day he is used to dry biscuits. Also one more thing I have noticed, mainly with the expensive makes of tinned cat food. Not all the tins are complete. If you look at makes like canogan and applaws some flavours are complete and some are listed in tiny writing as complementary food. I think this is irrisponsible to not have it in huge writing on the tin. You could be feeding your cat hideously expensive tinned food thinking you're doing the best and actually your cat is not getting the nutrients it needs.

The more you research, the more confused you get. A rep is always going to promote their brand of cat food. I don't see anything wrong with dry supplementing a cat's diet. Raiden nibbles on dry once a day. Doesn't eat much of it. The key is that you have got to purchase a brand and type for cats with sensitive tummies. Something is not sitting right with your kitty. I don't think the food is any more expensive than regular cat food, but it's worth a try to find something that your kitty can enjoy without throwing it up. The manufacturers' even list "sensitive stomachs" on the can. I really want to see you succeed here and be happy with the result.
