My cat has taken to a few unexpected things over time such as apples but recently I regained my fondness for Glenryck Pilchards in tomato sauce. She expressed a big interest in what I was eating and I assumed it was the fish smell so wiped off the tomato sauce and gave her a bit of the fish. She seemed to lose interest but when I put my bowl down she went and licked it clean of all the tomato sauce.

I checked the ingredients and it's basically just the following:
Pilchards
Tomato sauce from concentrate
Salt
Tapioca starch
Guar gum

I did a bit of a google search but didn't come to any real conclusion as to whether it might be good or bad for her but it does seem to suggest tomatoes are safe?

I tend to have the pilchards a few times a week and thought it would be a nice treat for her to have a little bit as well with the sauce.

I don't think tomatoes themselves are toxic to cats, but onion and garlic are, so you might need to carefully check the ingredients.

Onions And Garlic (Raw, Cooked, Or Powder): These contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs.

I was wondering about tomatoes myself. Is it wacky that I omit things from my cooking so the cats can taste a little? They sit below me at meal time and lightly run their paws down my legs, ever so lightly letting me feel the tip of their nails. Not enough to mark but just enough to make me aware of their presence. I guess this is called begging and I have allowed it to happen. Luckily they don't do this when others are around, so it's our little secret.

Thanks brianj12, I hoped tomatoes were ok. The only ingredients on the tin was the tomato juice, guar gum, salt and tapioca starch aside from the fish and it states as well no added flavourings or preservatives so seems fairly natural.

CMYKjill - your cats seem more patient than mine. My cat is quite happy to stick her face into any packet of anything that I open before I get chance to look inside or help herself to anything I'm trying to eat. I grew up with a dog so a very different experience I know now to owning a cat, our dog would wait until you're out the room before having a go at whatever food is on the table, I know now a cat will help themselves regardless! :)

I guess we get so close to our cats that they see us as the same and should therefore share all food. They seem so happy when we do.
