Hi,

I'm new to the forum, cats and Bengals and need some advice. We have a 4 month old kitten that we have had for 2 weeks now, and i am a little confused as to how much i should be feeding her.

We are putting down 37g of Royal Canin Kitten kibble in the morning and this stays down all of the time, there is only a little left the next morning. We are also giving her 1 pouch of Whiskers kitten when we have our supper at around 6pm.

I am worried this is not enough, and she seems to be hungry all the time. She keeps jumping up on the kitchen work surfaces to eat what ever she can when we are not looking or are out. This includes getting bagels, biscuits and loaves of bread out of the bread bin!

The breeder had Royal Canin Kitten down all of the time and would give her 1 pouch of Whiskers Kitten once per week as a treat.

When we got our two I think they were a little older but we quickly increased the food that we'd been told to feed them by the breeder as they were definitely still hungry. As kittens they are growing so just try increasing her daily intake a bit, say half a pouch extra to start with, perhaps in the morning, and see if she seems less hungry. At nearly four months, ours were on a pouch each morning and evening with dry down as well if they wanted it.

Have a look on the box as it gives you an idea by age and weight roughly what they should be eating, although every kitten is different and it may be slightly less or more than the suggested intake.

As a rapidly growing kitty, she needs to eat quite a bit, but doesn't yet have a very big stomach, so it's lots of little meals. You don't yet have to worry too much about over-feeding at this point, so definitely err on the side of feeding more as opposed to less. Leaving down dry food is ok, and at this age it's useful so she can graze throughout the day, but keep in mind that the longer it's in the dish, the less desirable it becomes (with regards to their being "left over" in the morning next time you feed her).

You should probably at least consider feeding more wet food as well, to supplement the dry (or better yet, have the dry supplement the wet food). Wet food is better for her overall, as it has the moisture she needs in it, and is higher percentage of meat and less filler than dry.

When your cat gets closer to one year, then you'll need to start worrying about feeding the right amount so as to maintain a healthy weight, but by then you should have a good feel for how much she is eating, and how she is doing weight & body-shape-wise. Your vet will be able to give you feedback on that as well when you take her in for routine visits.

Hi as Brian stated a younger kitten needs little and often, so ideally at her age I personally would be giving her 1/2-1 pouch 3 times a day and then leaving a bowl of biscuits for her to eat as she pleases.

One pouch in the evening is going to cause her to be crying for food as it's not enough, when she was at the breeders she may well have been given 3 meals a day and will be struggling to cope with not having this.

I also understand not everyone can feed lunchtimes as you might work so you could try a pouch for breakfast and one for dinner with biscuits left down during the rest of the time.
