My 4 yr old bengal has IBD and is doing well . So, if it aint broke dont fix it applies. But. should I consider a brand of food change. Currently he is eating 2 cans of royan canin green pea/venison. It is a prescribed can that cost 2.75 per can. And I see that Natural Balance has a non prescription food called venison and green pea from their Limited ingredient line.. And the cost is at least half of the royal canin? Should I chance the changeover?

Can you link both of them, so I can see what is listed ? I would like to compare what is different. From my own exp though.. whenever I've tried to save a buck, it backfires on me...

Well, on-paper, Natural Balance looks easily superior in terms of ingredients, since the #1 ingredient in the Royal Canin formulation is by-products. I think with Royal Canin you always pay a premium based on their larger advertising budget. Some additional thoughts:

* I think often times, once you get the food, what your eyes and nose tell you, gives you a good idea about the quality, more so than the label.
* Since your cat needs a limited ingredient food, you need to be real careful. The #1 thing has to be how your cat does on it, both in terms of how he likes it and whether it helps control his symptoms.
* If you are fortunate enough that your cat like both foods, that might be valuable to you, not just in cost savings but because I really fear being in the position where your cat is only able to eat a single food. It's like having all your eggs in one basket, both in terms of nutrition and in terms of you really don't know whether these foods will be available a year or two from now.

I think it's probably worth a try. If I was you'd I'd try it, but don't make the decision based on cost, having a cat that loves his food and digests it well is definitely the most important thing.

You definitely do not want a flare-up, so be extremely careful. Unfortunately, when there is an ailment of some type, things can get more expensive. Would you do the same for yourself if you had IBD? Try a different food? I don't know where you're located, but ordering online can save you a lot of money. Do some research and see what you can find. If the Natural Balance has similar ingredients and you want to try it for a short time to see if works, do so, but keep close watch on your baby and stop the food at the first sign of a problem.
