I have a bengal cat who is 14 years old, yet he is very active and in pretty good shape for his age. I been reading this forum and I really can't figure out which solution would work best for him.

He is on a dry only food diet, and after he eats he usually throws up, this has been happening for the last month. I want to switch foods but I am scared for him being on the same food for the a very long time, he will experience worst issues. I am considering a vet food brand, does this community have any recommends for sensitive stomach food? Which I think I want to try first, I am in the USA.

I don't want to take him to the vet since I think they will say he is so old, and will want me to put him down.

Any help is appreciated, I hope I communicated my point clearly, sorry if I didn't.

Poached chicken breast or turkey breast is always a good enticement, and gentle on the tummy. Give the juice as well when cooled down for hydration. My boy is 15 in January, and throws up occasionally - Often goes through bouts of sensitivity towards tuna in food....
I make sure he has no tuna for a few weeks, then he can eat it again. Weird!

If it carries on though, you do need to go to the vet, to rule out anything else like a blockage, etc.

No Vet is going to put a 14 year old cat down, but if you leave him too long he could die anyway and that would be awful if a vet visit could cure him.

My 18 year old moggie just had a minor op and sailed through it, so 14 is no age at all.

How long has it been since he ate and kept food down? I agree, a vet will try to help him, not want to put him down. There is no other viable option for you and him but to bring him to a vet for help ASAP. I would try a vet diet, perhaps critical care food (a/d) at this point, which the vet can set you up with a feeding syringe for. It is of a consistency that you can mix it with water and syringe a little mixture into the corner of his mouth every hour or so. If cats stop getting nourishment, they can go anorexic quickly and develop hepatic lipidosis and liver failure. You might prevent that by doing something to help him.

The vet can do a complete blood count to try and figure out what is causing this. An x-ray or ultrasound might show if there is a blockage. I also agree that this may be quite solvable. You will never know if he could be helped, unless you try to help him. Good luck and please keep us posted!

That's about the age my last cat developed kidney disease. She threw up a lot and was quite thin, but with hydration lived 4 more years. I agree with Brian and Elaine, a vet would not want to put down your kitty. This is what they are in business for. Please get your kitty checked out. They should do blood work and urinalysis. Throwing up is not pleasant for your kitty and vets can suggest medication that shuts the off the nausea in the brain and another that shuts it off in the stomach. It really works like magic when properly administrated. Good luck and keep us posted.

Like Brian said, doubt they will put him down.

We had a 15 year old Burmese who was extremely ill and suffering. We loved him to bits and selfishly did not want to let him go but could tell he was on his last legs. Even so the vet wanted to carry out tests etc and to be honest I did wonder about whether this was purely financial greed.

I do not understand how some vets can quite happily keep treating cats who are obviously very, very ill and in a desperate state. I think pets are very lucky in that we as owners can tell when they have had enough and put an end to their suffering unlike us who have to grin and bear it!

We made the hard decision to put him to sleep for his own comfort no ours. I still cry often and miss him terribly. He was my big cuddly teddy bear.

So no they won't put him to sleep unless of course you think that is the best for him.

I also agree with Elaine and don't think that 14 is a huge age.

There has already been some good suggestions.

I just wanted to mention I had a cat (He was half Siberian half alley cat/tuxedo) who, at around that age, started vomiting regularly (every other day or so). Some were hairballs, though he always managed to pass hairballs before that age so it was unusual for him since he had never barfed before. Anyway all the changes in diet and hairball stuff and everything else didn't really help. We just ended up cleaning up after him, and carrying on. He lived to the ripe age of 22, where we actually ended up putting him down not because he was sick from age, but because he had an infected tooth that had gotten so bad that they said he needed most of his jaw removed. It was almost impossible to tell until it was too late (he didn't really show a lot of signs of distress but eventually I noticed he had terrible breath) and the antibiotics weren't enough at that point.

Anyway my point is, if he hadn't had that infection, he probably would have lived even longer, maybe even a full decade or more of happy barfing.

I'm not saying you shouldn't take any changes in your cats behavior and health seriously... I'm just saying don't freak out if you're doing everything you can to figure it out. :)
It's tough to see them sick but it's easy to obsess over things that may be beyond our control
