Hi everyone,

So I've had my wonderful, somewhat crazy, new little Bengal bundle of joy (we've named her Hadley) for 2 weeks now, and I'm trying to decide what food to keep her on. The breeder sent her home with Taste of the Wild and Blue Diamond for dry food, and Friskies Pate for wet food. She said she had been eating a raw diet in addition to the friskies for wet. However, I do not have the time to keep her on a raw diet, but I refuse to let her eat that Friskies crap any longer (pardon my french). I had bought Blue Wilderness Kitten food and Evo dry food, and have been slowly mixing those in for the past week, and she seems to like them quite well--Evo doesn't have a kitten-specific formula, so that's why I decided to mix them. However, the other two brands I was considering trying are the CORE Wellness, and Orijen. I bought the Blue Wilderness & CORE for wet foods to try them out, and I'm hoping that one of them will be the solution to the stinky poops she was having (which I think probably was from the friskies--already better after the switch). I did read a few other posts on this topic involving those brands, but I was wondering if anyone had more recent experiences/input they'd like to share. I have read lots of great things about Orijen, and all the others, but I don't know how much I can keep switching her food around without upsetting her tummy....Any help is appreciated, by myself and little Hadley! :)

Stinky poos very often mean some sort of parasite unfortunately. You might need to check with the vet on that.

I would caution against EVO. Most pet food stores have stopped carrying it, and my cats (all 3 of them) got very ill on EVO last year after one of their recalls (even though the food they were eating wasn't part of the recall) because they can't get their quality control problems sorted out, so please cross that off your list for the sake of your cat.

As far as the other ones you list go (and I would probably add Tiki Cat, Weruva, and Earthborn Hollistic to that list, plus probably a few more), I think it is kind of splitting hairs. My advise is to find a few things from that list that your kitten has a lot of enthusiasm for, and go with that. Mix it up, make sure that he isn't 100% reliant on one particular food. And I wouldn't worry about something being a "kitten specific food" or not. I took my bengals off "kitten" food after the first month or so, and Neytiri ate what the bengals ate, when she came along 6 months later or so, so she never did have any.

Another thing to consider is that you can do a raw diet without any work. There are products like this that you can buy off the shelf:

My cats love Orijen for dry food. I like that it's made in Canada from their own plant, not sourced from other facilities. They also like: Instinct, Merrick's, Natural Balance Alpha and LE formulas, Acana, and Fromm.

They love these wet food choices: Merrick's, Wellness, Wellness CORE, Evanger's, Lotus, Canidae, Taste of the Wild, Soulistic, By Nature, and the occasional Dave's.

There are a few other good ones but my cat's just don't like them.

I should explain why I listed so many choices; I try to stick with one dry food at a time so I don't cause their tummies to be upset but they do fine with a rotation diet of the various wet foods. The reason I do this is because with the pet food industry being what it is I want to insure that in the event that there is a recall my cats have less exposure than if they were on that diet exclusively.

Thank you for the replies! I returned the Evo and have ordered the Orijen dry food. It is pricey but I want her tummy to be happy and healthy and I agree that this brand's transparency is comforting. She seems to prefer the Wellness CORE over the Blue wilderness wet so that looks like what I'll be ordering more of! I do like the idea of mixing up her food to an extent-- I will look into the other brands you both mentioned. Thank you for the advice :)

I pulled my boys off it after three recalls in a year.
The only thing mine will eat is the Merrick Purrfect Bistro (formerly Before or Beyond Grain).
And I tried everything I could get in stores. Mine are sensitive to corn, all grains, and anything but chicken or duck in a dry food.
