So I've decided to go with the recipe on http://www.catnutrition.org and add some supplements. The reason for this is because my big baby won't eat organs and is kind of fussy about bone. I also must admit that I'm a bit stressed when it comes to bone so I want to grind the bigger bones (like chicken legs).
But me being a natural doubter, I have to do some research on vitamins to make sure I add adequate amounts. While I don't want them to be deficient, some vitamins in excess cause toxicity (like A&D) and I have to be quite careful on that.
I've found some good resources for cat nutritional needs, for whoever's interested and has the time:
Vitamins - http://dogcathomeprepareddiet.com/vitamins.html
http://www.knowyourcat.info/info/vitamins.htm

Minerals - http://dogcathomeprepareddiet.com/minerals.html
Good book on nutritional requriements: http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=910&page=1

Also, I've read somewhere that you should not feed beef liver, especially from grass fed beef. For the life of me I cannot find the link but I remember it said that it has an excess of vitamin A and if fed in large amounts can cause vitamin A toxicity.

thanks I was just going to buy some beef liver for the first time. I'll stick to chicken liver now.

I've done some research on vitamin A to know how much it would be safe to add if not feeling liver.
So, 100 g of chicken liver = ~ 20.000 IU of vit A so for a recipe that requires 200g liver, 40.000 IU vit A would be apropriate.
Btw, this is an excelent book on cat nutrition: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/raising ... 0749?mt=11

Need to set some facts straight: conventionally raised beef should not be fed, grass fed is allright. Found the info in the book mentioned above.

I just wanted to add a note that i feel is very important.

If you are wishing to change to raw feeding to cure a runny poo problem please test for parasites first including Tritrichomonas Foetus (TF).

Raw feeding can mask underlying problems.

Once testing has been done, then make the switch.

Important to test first as some parasites are not shed in firm poo but will remain in the gut to cause further damage.

:D

Viperkeeper, from what I understood, conventionally fed is used for cows fed grain instead of grass (probably those raised on an industrial scale). They are lower in protein and higher in fat, especially saturated fats and it throws of the omega 6 - omega 3 ratio. If you'd like I can find the time tomorrow to post the nutritional values of a few recipes (beef based, rabbit based, chicken and turkey).

I was watching a show about the importance of corn in the US. They said a farmer raises a cow for X# of years before its sold for slaughter. But actually the cow goes to a farm to be feed corn first for 6 months. The corn doubles the weight of the cow in just 6 months  I didn't think that was conventional but I do remember that the company that owns the corn farm supplied something crazy like 85% of the WORLDS meat. Its scary but what worries me is I'm sure its more than just corn probably drugs and hormones too.

I can't tell a difference but Pouncey won't eat anything unless its hormone free/grain feed/free range. Cats are naturally very good at only eating what's good for them, we call this "picky". Somehow he can tell. This is an example of how he changed my life. I only get HF/GF/FR meats for myself now.

If you don't mind I'd like to see the nutritional values. I had difficulty deciding between Chicken/Duck/Turkey I found they had different fat contents but IIRC cats use fat differently than people and fat is a good thing. So my solution is just switching between them with different batches of Pouncey's food.

Ok so I've found a better solution than writing everything myself :) Tables I've seen were based on NAT which is still online and you can use them to calculate whatever you need.
You can calculate the nutritional value of (raw) food by using NAT:
"NAT is provided as a public service by the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department at the University of Illinois. The tool is intended to empower individuals to select a nutrient dense diet. It is not intended to replace the advice of a physician or health professional.

The database used by NAT is composed of the USDA Handbook #8 and information from food companies. The data should not be taken as an exact representation of the nutrient content of your diet. The numbers used for analysis are averages and there is great variance in nutrient content for each food item in the database. The nutrient information is also not complete for every food listed in NAT as there are still gaps in our knowledge of food composition." - http://www.myfoodrecord.com/

Thanks I was surprised it allowed me to feed raw rabbit to a 1yr old child. You think there'd be a warning or something. Thanks

My furbabies are 10 months, very healthy, shiny and happy and have been raw fed since the day I got them. My boy is about 6.5kg and solid! Aya is only 3.5kg but she is healthy, just small.

I have been consistently feeding them a mix of roughly 2 whole chickens, 1kg chicken necks, 1kg combination of either 500g lean beef / 500g lean lamb / 500g lean goat , with around 400g chicken heart, 400g lamb heart, 200g lamb kidneys, 200g lamb or chicken liver plus about 4 eggs. I buy all their meat from the local Halal butcher mainly because it is cheap, but also because it is guaranteed to be fresh with no preservatives. I don't know if it is hormone free... I have just realised I have never checked whether they are grass fed or gain fed. Tbh, I don't know where else to get organs that are this fresh and guaranteed to be preservative free.

I am curious why beef would be a problem or is it only grain fed because of the toxins in grain? My boy just LOVES red meat - he will go for it first before anything else!

I am wondering what people feed in terms of occasional veggies for fibre? My girl's poo is quite dry as she doesn't drink water (well, I have never seen her do it!) and I want to soften them a bit. I know too much bone can be the problem, but I don't think they are getting too much.. any suggestions for veg that is suitable? And how much/often?
