Oscar went to the vets for a routine dental the other day. They did bloods first and it flagged up that he has mild kidney disease. He is 9 now so hopefully it is a condition that can be managed. He now has to have a specific renal diet. Any suggestions as to good brands etc?
I have ordered some of Hills, Royal Canin and Kattovit (thanks Clare!) to see what he likes but would welcome any other suggestion of renal food I can source in the UK. The basic rules for renal diet are very low protein, phosphorus, potassium and sodium. I have been feeding Oscar Canagan which is extremely good quality and grain free but obviously far too high in protein for him now. My worries are that there are no grain free options as the good quality foods are all far too high protein. I'm worried that all the renal foods are basically rubbish and full of fillers and goodness knows what, because the meat content has to be low. I don't have an option really so will just have to swap foods slowly but would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks everyone!

Hi Melissa

I've just found this site - have you seen it? Looks like it could be worth a read:

http://www.felinecrf.org/which_foods.htm

Really hope that you find something he will eat and you are happy to serve him! As someone dealing with a human with kidney disease, the diets are bland and horrible - we also struggle to find food we want to eat! I feel for you and Oscar!

Did the vet check his blood pressure as well?

Oh Melissa, I am so sorry to hear about Oscar. At least they have caught it early. Most foods specifically to deal with renal failure are prescription. And they don't taste that good to a cat, so you may have to mix some things to get him used to it. Hopefully, the diet will take care of things. A lot of good information is available online as well. Good luck.
