breeders who HCM screen?

Do you know it hadn't even occured to me to find breeders by looking at the negative list - doh! Much more sensible than googling 'silver spotted hcm screened' as I have been doing with little success. You are all so helpful.

We're only *thinking* about it at the moment - hubby is yet to be completely convinced by the idea, but I thought I would research all the options now, so that if we decide to go ahead we have an idea of where to get our new baby from

I think he's worried I just want another kitten now Arty's grown up :wink:

But it really comes down to the fact that Arty needs a more playful friend as well as his mum. There is a moggy that lives a few doors down that comes and sits on the windowsill to meow at Arty and it breaks my heart

He's so desperate to play with it.

I've just looked at the list - I'm actually quite surprised how few breeders there are on there.

I agree with Ginny, since learning more about HCM I would definately only buy from HCM negative parents in the future. Before I bought my 2 current bengals I had researched the breed in terms of temperament, colours etc, but I was very naive with regard to health risks.

I think a good way of encouraging breeders to screen their breeding cats is if people do more research before purchasing & only buy from breeders who screen their animals & have negative results.

hmmm, there really aren't many breeders on there are there? And what is with the breeders who only seem to screen their studs, I don't understand why you'd screen the studs and not the queens

I guess maybe there are more people out there HCM screening who aren't doing it with through FAB.

It is shocking how few breeders and cats are on that list, considering how many breeders there are, i find it very disheartening....

Yes, it is disheartening.

I know some breeders are supposedly scanning but not sharing results on the FAB website or anywhere else and some are scanning with vets that are not FAB registered cardiologists.
Others are scanning young breeding cats and declaring them negative, knowing that the father or mother of their cat is positive/EQ or has produced positive/EQ offspring, so it is a minefield.

Scanning studs is better than nothing but as you rightly point out Ghostie, it means nothing if the mother has the disease.

Hopefully in the future, if more breeders realise the importance of scanning regularly and realise the real threat to the breed of using some very high risk cats to breed from, then that will be a huge step forward in reducing the dangers of HCM that many cats are facing.

Ditto Miki ……..and…..even if they do publishing their negative results, they sometimes do so KNOWING FULL WELL that their negative cats have produced positive offspring. Diabolical.
