I recently ran across someone selling two cats, one was a full blooded(obvious by markings) bengal, and the other she claims is 3/4. I am not sure how to tell myself, and didnt want to pay $200 for a dhc.

She is not being bought for breeding and will be spayed, but I was hoping for the personality, etc.

Welcome to the forum. Without registration papers on the parents, it is extremely difficult to know whether a cat is a bengal or even a bengal mix. However, there are physical characteristics that a bengal will have over a tabby or any other breed. The face in the photo looks very bengal to me. There is not a picture of any rosettes or marbling, but the typical tabby striping. The bengal breed came from the domestic cat and there are many spotted tabbies (Egyptian Maos, Ocicats) in the pedigrees of most bengals.

The issue we have here is a breeder who is not taking her job seriously and breeding mixes. I don't know that even being "part" bengal without any type of proof is worth any money. It's up to you to decide if this is the kitty for you and if the kitty is worth the money. If so, by all means, get the kitty. All pets need homes and there are so many out there who don't have a home. Personality should be the #1 reason you take a cat.

Here's how I look at it...

To me, the reasons to buy a cat from a good/legit breeder is that you know you are getting a selectively bred cat, which is representative of the breed, and that you are able to get him at a kitten-age (because they are fun), and that you know that they are well raised, healthy, and well socialized. Note that I said a good/legit breeder, so you have to do your homework on that too.

The reason to get a cat from a shelter is that it is the socially responsible thing to do, plus at least their health has been checked out, they've been given basic care, and they'll tell you about any findings. That plus you can go meet the cats, spend time with them find one that has a personality that you like and seems particularly compatible.

I think buying a cat from "some guy" is something I would probably never do. It has none of the advantages of either of the above, and just the fact that they are selling their cat rings all kinds of red flags to me.
