Hi, I was wondering how much you should pay for a Bengal. I've noticed the prices range from £100 - £550? I went to a well known reputable local breeder who wanted £550 for a pedigree kitten then looked on Gumtree & some were as little as £100. How do you know what to go for?

It will depend on a number of different factors :-

1. How old is the kitten/cat? usually a kitten homed at 13 weeks will around the £450-£550 price
- If the cat is an older kitten say 5months + you are looking around £250
- An ex breeder might be around £100-£200 - or sometimes just a fee to cover neutering

2. Is the kitten registered?
- Yes then this should be either with TICA, GCCF or Felis Britanica - some people will charge £250 for a non-registered Bengal (usually a cross or nothing to do with a bengal at all - they might provide a pedigree - which without the official registration is worth nothing

Do your homework - the simple fact is a fully pedigree registered Bengal kitten will not cost £100 from a reputable breeder. The two vaccinations alone that they should receive at 9 & 12 weeks will be nigh on £90 alone. Then there is the 3 months of raising, the stud fee, worming costs, food, health screenings and so on - all these are very amountable and all reputable breeders should be doing them - therefore they charge the appropriate fee of £450-£550 for a quality kitten.

Thank you so much for all that information. I've taken down quite a few notes so I'm more aware of what I'm looking for when buying a kitten/cat.

One of my concerns (apart from a reputable breeder and healthy kitten) was that I wasn't paying too much money for a kitten/cat that was not from a home/cattery that was good. I had initially thought I would pay approximately £200-£300 after looking at the adverts on the Internet. Now after research I think to ensure I get a good healthy kitten it will be more than this so I will keep saving :-)

Thank you again for your advice, I feel a lot more reassured now that I've been on here and heard from you both. I would much rather save and pay the right price for a healthy kitten/cat than pay less for one from an unreputable breeder.

Thankfully all breeders I've been looking at are all registered and supply contracts/care sheets etc so hopefully in the near future Ill be ready to buy.

I'm also going to a GCFF cat show so will make sure to ask lots of questions and have a good look at the Bengals that are showing.

You may find that there is a waiting list for kittens so I'm sure you will have time to save up for the right one, it will be worth it!

As a thought, Lindsay, on top of what Heather and Claire have said - You could also look at getting a retired stud or queen which would be a lovely cat but a little older, and normally much cheaper. They are also often only 2 -3 years old!
