Regarding cat beds... please see my new thread in the "Gallery" section. I would contend that if you select a reasonable bed, put it in a location where the cat will enjoy sleeping, and don't "force" the bed on him, you will have an extremely high success rate in terms of him using it.
On the topic of collars: this one is a bit controversial. There used to be a member here that had a cat that got badly hurt because she let the cat outside, unsupervised, with a non-break-away collar. And she would steer every new member to her thread of pretty graphic pictures of her cats injuries. That said though, I think there are pretty big advantages to having break-away collars on your cat. I found it useful to have collars on Serafina and Gaga when they were kittens, mainly because it helped me to keep track of them. On many occasions, the tinkling of little bells from their collars alerted me to where they were, and what they were up to (mischief!). I've since decided that since they are now easier to keep track of, and indoor-only cats, I've removed their collars. But if I start taking them on walks, or finding away to cat-proof the back yard and let them out there, I will definitely put collars on them.
Good idea to get your new kitten a tree. Make it as big a one as you can afford. Even very small kittens love a big tree.
here's a good example:
My suggestion is also to look into pet insurance, and also line up a vet, and schedule a visit very soon after getting your new kitten.
