I have a beautiful 9 month old leopard spotted Bengal, she is lively, intelligent and great fun and very loved. As with all kittens we have had our ups and downs and taken it our stride. She is growing up to be a loving and fun character. When we got here from the breeders we had terrible stomach problems with her and i had all this sorted with the vets. She is spayed and we are still trying to train her to go outside to the loo. But she has a litter tray - always cleaned and never left longer than 3 days when we clean it out disinfect and set her up again. We also have a another slightly older cat Buster and although it took a month at the beginning to get to know each other last July, they are happy with each other and very settled and have a great time playing running around the house chasing each other. So all behaviour is lovely and settled and happy - no fights, no fraught distress and all calm and happy.

BUT - she has one problem - when she gets onto a bed with a duvet - she seems to go into a bit of a trance like state and just pee's. We have spent a fortune in getting duvets washed by a laundry company. I have even bought a incontinent duvet and split it in two and use those as covers so that the duvets don't get ruined. We use enzyme sprays on the covers etc when this happens. She doesn't do it every time - but sporadically and on either my bed or my house mates bed. She has been known to poo on my house mates bed. She is happy using the litter tray and has no problem with it. I noticed that she was a bit lazy with peeing in the tray in that she will squat, pee and then just leave it rather than try and cover it up.
We have even taken to banning her from the bedrooms - which is not what i want for her to be honest as believe the guys should have total freedom in the house. But this morning she jumped up to say good morning and i was stroking her and she was fine - walked across onto the other side of the duvet and into trance like stance and started to pee. I caught her but not without the damage being done.

Can someone please help me out here.

I am pretty sure it is not territorial as the house is big enough for each cat to have its own floor - even though they like each others company. I just don't understand why she would do this particularly as she realises its wrong and runs off after she has done it. We are both getting exasperated. I don't want to ban here to the kitchen as she is to bright and i don't think that is the answer. After a period when she was banned from the bedrooms i thought she would have grown up - but no. We just don't know what the next step should be to stop her from doing this.

Do you just have one litter tray for 2 cats? Is her litter tray on a different floor?

I would add some more trays, maybe try a different brand of litter to see if there is one she prefers. Make the litter boxes more attractive than your bed and have them easily accessible. Then cover the beds with plastic sheets or something that would turn her off to using the bed. This can be temporary once she learns to love the litter-boxes more.

Also be sure to have a vet check her out in case there is some underlying medical cause.

My gal started going on the floor for awhile next to the box after some really bad stomach issues as well, I had to take the top off the box and scoop it multiple times a day to make the box more attractive than the floor. Now I can scoop every other day with no issues.

How are you training her to go to the bathroom outside? Possibly this is causing some confusion for her?

BTW my parents have 3 indoor/outdoor kitties and one likes to do all his business outside even though they have cat boxes inside. This would be great because less scooping, right? Wrong! He wakes them up to go out at all hours of the night and sometimes multiple times. Then he comes back and scratches at the patio door to come back in waking them up again lol Be careful what you wish for!

I think your squeamishness about having your cats do their business inside the house is causing most of this problem.

First problem: the "training her to go outside". To me that's a dog thing, not a cat-thing. She's not a dog, don't do that.

Second problem: Too few boxes, and too dirty. The rule of thumb is: one box, per cat, per floor, plus one. 2 cats, 2 floors, should mean 5 boxes, not 1.
Rationale for this:
1. Cats can't be counted on to go upstairs from downstairs or downstairs from upstairs when they need to go.
2. Cats many times want a "poo box" and a different "pee box". So if there is poo in the box, your duvet becomes the pee-box.
3. If you think that a litterbox seems smelly to you, imagine if your sense of smell were 7x what it is (that's how good cats smell). If your cat is having "litterbox problems" and there is any suspicion that it is due to rejecting the litterbox, you need to keep it (them) a lot cleaner than every 3 days!

Third Problem: Getting booted from the bedroom. The bedroom is usually pretty sacred ground to cats. So being sometimes let it, sometimes not, something having their humans cheesed off at them etc., that alone can cause stress, and stress can lead to litterbox problems. I get it that it's stressful to you too, but understand that to solve this you probably need to reduce the stress on your cat.

My suggestion is:
1. add the extra boxes, keep them really clean. Put a litterbox next to where her "hot spots" are (where she goes inappropriately)
2. Get some feliway plugins. They are for cases like this.
3. make sure you are playing with your bengal every day. This reduces stress and lets her know you are still "buddies".
4. Extra catification (cat trees, cat shelving etc), although it seems unrelated, can help. Again, it makes cats feel more confident and have special places that "they own".

If you continue to have problems, consider seeing a cat behaviorist. I'm sure this is probably the #1 thing that they have to deal with. You can't be a cat behaviorist and not have a really solid gameplan for handling situations like yours. It isn't that uncommon.

I'm guessing there is an attractive odor to the duvet. You can't smell it, but your kitty can. Since that is the ONLY other place she goes. If you are having the duvet professionally cleaned, they may use a type of solvent that your kitty finds attractive. However, know that this is a common issue. Cats peeing on the owners beds.

I agree the key is having more litter boxes than you need. Most litter boxes do not need to be completely cleaned and refreshed every three days. There are also pellets you can try to offer something different.

I agree that cats should have access to all areas of the home. My bengals has to sleep at my feet every night. And he has never peed on the bed.

I think all you can do is try different things until something sticks. I would, in the mean time, restrict her access to the bedroom until she begins using the other litter boxes exclusively.

Good luck and keep us posted.
