I have an 18m old Bengal and a 4 month old puppy. They were kept apart and introduced slowly. The cat has high space and a catflap, plus upstairs to escape to

The first few weeks Khan the cat was hissing and very annoyed at the puppy, things have progressed and the cat tolerates the puppy, they have even snuggled down for a nap together twice (although the puppy was already asleep when the cat lay down with her)

The puppy is acting dominant - she half mounts Khan and bites his nape, not hard. She tries to take Khan down.

Clearly I don't let this happen, but Im struggling to see where mutual play starts and ends. The cat runs away, gets on high, but then runs back past the puppy, sometimes even barging her. If he were scared he would vacate wouldn't he? He's not hissing or baring his teeth, he has escape places, he doesn't go to them but instead he seems to be taunting the puppy and pushing her into chasing him.

This is what Im hoping, that its play that they are both engaged in. What Im worried about is that the cat is going back for more to try and win a territory contest or something that he is stressed about and unhappily trying to gain ground

Any insight?

It can be hard to work out what is going on when you suddenly find a bengal cat running around the place. Been there, worried about it, got the t-shirt. It really wasn't that long ago I was on here somewhat worried about the way my 2 were behaving with each other. Add in a puppy, and that is another level again.

It might be worthwhile videoing their behaviour - as a lot of animal communication is about body-language it can be hard to provide a good explanation of what you are seeing and even harder for others to come to a conclusion of what is happening.

Other than that, look for signs of fear - if there aren't any and the cat keeps coming back for more of the same, then it would suggest, taking into account the above, that it is indeed play.

Aggressive play is never acceptable. They can really hurt each other. You should be engaging both of them in play -- and not relying on them to occupy and entertain each other. Bengals have so much energy as do puppies. It can be a challenge for you. The puppy will probably grow to be larger than your bengal. While cats and dogs can get along, the learning curve can be pretty large. Since dogs and cats like different types of toys, you may have to entertain them separately.
