My cat Ollie is having great fun destroying the wallpaper in one place in the hall. It's in a place that he goes past too enter any room or access any floor in the house. It is not in a position than can be closed off to him. I was wondering if anyone knew of a deterrent to stop him doing this. He does have a scratch post which he uses.

If it were me, I would put a horizontal scratch mat/rug on the floor in the hallway, and a small vertical one to give him other immediate options to scratch. Might also put a box out in the hall for him to play with. I would try to temporarily block off the bit of wallpaper he in process of destroying by putting something in front it, and hope in a week or two he is used to his new scratching items and has forgotten about the wallpaper.

That sounds like it could work. I put a big cardboard box in front of a wooden planter one of my cats chew. Now she chews the cardboard box. I am so glad I don't have wall paper. Both my cats leap against the walls and slide down with their nails screeching (over and over). Usually when they are angry the other is getting attention or when they come in the house at night. They also scratch at the popcorn ceiling over and over (so annoying).

I have a corner wall scratcher fixed to a corner wall that Magic likes to claw at, it works a treat.

One scratching post is not enough. Mine has several including on his cat trees. I've seen people hang a scratching mat vertically for the cat they love to stretch up! I'd think about getting something like that and putting it where he usually scratches! Where was your cat when we were trying to get RID of the wallpaper on our walls? I could have used his help. :biggrin:

Mine have their 7 foot cat tree plus a 4 foot giant scratcher and 2 corrugated cardboard scratchers and the one on the corner of the wall, oh yes and a big cardboard house with scratcher on the base.

There are a bunch of sprays (like "bitter yuck") that basically tell your cat "this is off limits". But with that "no", you really should offer a "yes" and get him something big and vertical and tall where he can scratch away.
