Magic being aggressive towards Pearl

Been having abit of aggression from Magic towards Pearl.

Not sure if he's grumpy because of the hot weather or something else.

She is so lively she wants to play all the time with him and he doesn't always want to, she jumps on him quite alot so he growls and hisses at her and then he will slap her, she doesn't always get the message and goes back for more which makes it worse.

They will sleep on the same cat tree Magic on the top her the next one down and they are fine, she will also lick his head and face which he likes until she will then get a bit rough and start biting his throat playing and it starts all over again.

Do you think this is play aggression or something more?

Pearl is still a baby really at 8 months and is always bouncing off the walls literally.

Yes Magic has high places to go ( which he does) but she will follow him up and jump on top of him then he gets cross.

She chases him everywhere so it's got to the point that sometimes he starts growling as soon as he sees her, she doesn't take a blind bit of notice and chases him, it like she can't seem to get the message he doesn't want to play, yet other times ( not that often) he will play with her.

I don't know what is going on as this has only started in the last month or so.

How much play are you giving Pearl ?

At 8 months she's going to need wearing out each day.

I give her a fair bit but maybe you are right she might need more, I will try to up play time and see if it helps.

Thanks for the advice, I've had bengals for 11 years I should have thought of it, but Pearl has got so much more energy than any other I have had.

Maybe this will help to stop her running up my net curtains, they were brand new just before I got Pearl now they are almost in tatters, she is so different to Magic, he was naughty in other ways.

Bengals will wear a person out! Two must be horrible. Then you start with the age difference and how Pearl wants to play and Magic has had enough already. I do think the heat of the summer affects older kitties. I know Raiden has slowed down a lot and just wants to lounge around. We go out for our walks and he just lays in the grass. Too hot to walk around with a heat index of 100 and the asphalt roads being burning hot on his pads. He refuses to wait until early evening to go out when it's cooled off a little.

I know Clare can relate to what you're going through now. Sometimes these kitties get along great with no problem -- then when the problem starts, we tear our hair out trying to figure out what has gone wrong. Something is just different -- hope Pearl gets the play that she seems to need.

I am starting a new trial with her, everytime she tries to chase Magic I am distracting her with her da bird toy, I am making her run and jump until she is panting, let her rest for 5 minutes then start again and so on until she is too tired to play.

Have done this tonight while Magic went to sleep on his tree, then she went to sleep after, so far they have both only woken up and had a bowl of Turkey each and gone back to bed, so I will keep going with this and see how we get on.

I can't understand why this has come about because they were getting on so well, now he only has to look at her and he growls, I don't like Magic being upset.

Even 2 close cats can have different needs/wants for play and differing amounts of energy.

If you imagine a co-worker constantly coming up to you, batting your arm and saying

"is it play time yet"...
"is it play time yet"...
"is it play time yet"...
"is it play time yet"...
"is it play time yet"...
"is it play time yet"...
"is it play time yet"?

You'd probably growl whenever you saw them walking up to you.

Touch wood, at the moment we are not too bad, I have really been tiring her out to the point where she collapses on the floor panting.

Magic is playing with her on his terms, which is how it should be.

Hopefully as long as I can keep up this play we should have less growling and hissing.

The question is, are you worn out after playing with her? LOL. These things happen when you have multiple cats. They just do!!! Every day is not going to be sunshine and roses. Even children fight every now and then. It's just the nature of the beast. Keep doing what you're doing and hope things continue to be good.

Isn't that the whole point of our kitties playing with us - they wear us out so that they will get some peace and quiet whilst we have a snooze ?
