My two kitties are almost two years old. I have noticed that they are now sleeping a good portion of the afternoon even on the weekend when I am home. The last two weekends they have slept most of the day away. I try to engage them and Blondie will follow me around more than Grace, but yesterday Blondie was sitting on a little table next to my arm chair while I was eating a salad and her eyes were rolling back in her head she was so sleepy! It's a beautiful day out and they are both in the living room on their loungers sound asleep. I know that's their routine during the week when I'm away, but they used to stay awake on the weekends and follow me around. Is this typical for a two year old?

My two have always slept through the day, whether we are home or not (over the years we've worked from home, worked nearby home and occasionally popped in throughout the day, and now I stay at home with my baby daughter, so have seen them in varying situations). They go out in the morning or the evening, very much crepuscular! Have had the cats since they were 10 months, they are 5 years old now.

I don't know how typical this is, Jill. Maybe it's the lazy, hazy, crazy days of your Florida weather. Raiden seems to be sleeping more these days, too.

Ada and Babbage will be 2 at the end of April. They are very good in that they get up when I do, they are very active until fed, then will calm down, come and seek out cuddles or play a bit, then they'll snooze the morning away, and will happily snooze into the afternoon as well. As I work from the office some days they seem to be more active in the evenings and happy to snooze during the day unless something interesting is going on.

My guys generally nap during the afternoon. Their pod trackers also act as a bit of a Fitbit so they tell me how active they've been and there is a chart showing their activity throughout the day. It tells you how much walking they've done, running and resting. I put the trackers on them when I get up and in general they seem to be very active 5-6 hours per day (mainly in the morning and then for another hour and half after I'm home when I take off their trackers until the next morning) and you can clearly see their nap times in the afternoons.

If I'm home and doing something they think is interesting they might stay awake in the afternoon (like last weekend I decided to do some baking - not something they've ever seen before so were total pests and it took me twice as long to bake my Easter biscuits!), otherwise they couldn't care less if I'm home or not and will go for their nap regardless!

Which is excellent news as I get to chill out as well while they snooze away!

The only time I can accomplish anything around the house is when Raiden sleeps. If he is howling and pestering me, it's useless. He knows that is how he gets to go outside. Get mommy pissed off enough to throw her hands up in the air, grab the harness and leash and out the door we go! Sometimes I think this is worse than actually having children. The kids will eventually grow up and be self-sufficient.

I believe mine are 5yrs old now, and when I'm home there will often be some low level of cat activity going on (Serafina running on her wheel or demanding pettings, Gaga bringing me balls to throw, or Neytiri bringing me toys the she wants me to play with her with) but then I'll get distracted with what I'm doing, and suddenly realize that it's grown quiet... too quiet. Then inevitably I'll look down and realize Neytiri is sitting on my knee (you'd be surprised how often I don't even realize that initially ), and look up and see Serafina or Gaga up above me in the hicat or on a shelf or in a cat tree, happily snoozing away, but still keeping me in sight.

It gets very quiet at my home too. Then I wander off to the other side of the house and Blondie appears all sleepy and follows me around. Then Grace comes in to make sure food is not being offered. It's as if they are sleeping with one eye on me. If I sit in my office they both appear and lay on my desk in front of me and sleep. If I go to the kitchen they are both there watching my every move because treats have appeared in that room in the past, and they never forget. If there is nothing offered, they evaporate. I am so glad the weekend is around the corner!
