Hello, I'm new to the forum and have got a question that doesn't look like has been asked yet.
My 3 month old kitten has started to sleep next to the front door when no one is home. At first I thought she might just come to the front door when she hears us coming home, but recently every time she has been sleepy and when I feel the carpet it's warm, so she certainly sleeps there. It could be that she just find it the best place to sleep, but it worries me, that maybe she is just waiting for us to come home, even worse, maybe she spends the whole day there. That's surely no fun for her. Has anyone's cat behaved like this before? I hope it's a phase, don't want the poor thing to obsess about us not being there on a daily basis :(.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your baby. You have a brand new kitten! One who has been taken from mom and siblings and put into a totally different environment. It sounds as if you are gone most of the day and your kitty watches you go out the door and finds that spot as a safe place until you return -- as you will probably return through that same door! Bengal kitties require a lot of attention and time. I'm guessing your little one is not liking the fact that you are leaving her. Or she has not yet acclimated to the other areas of your home. Kittens do sleep a lot, but bengal kittens can get destructive if they are bored. Many new owners take some time to stay home in order to help the kitty acclimate to the new environment and start the bonding process.

As long as your kitty is eating, using the litter box, playing -- where a cat sleeps is not important. You can have a hundred cat beds in your house, but your kitty will sleep where it wants to sleep. Just make sure she does not run out the door upon your return.

I have two cats and every day I come home to this. But I am pretty sure they get into position after they hear the garage door open. When I open the laundry room door, they both drop down into the laundry room which is actually part of the garage converted. It's some sort of daily routine game they insist on playing over and over...

Max does this no matter who is still home or who is gone. I finally put a sleeping pad on the tile because I felt bad for him. If I don't come in from the garage fast enough, he howls under the door to call me inside. He's done it since he was very little and it cracks us up. Sweet boy.

Thank you for all your replies.

We have had her since just before Christmas and spent about 2 weeks with her, going out occasionally for longer period of times every couple of days, so she would get used to us not being at home. She seemed fine and was always sleeping in her bed when we got in. It's just last few weeks since she has been doing that. I'll try find her some more suitable places, she has got this blanket she adores and suckles on sometimes and I do always leave it out for her. Maybe I'll move it by the door and then gradually start moving it further away and hide treats under it. Are kittens allowed catnip? I've heard you shouldn't give it to them before they're a year old. I just want her to have fun when she is on her own. She doesn't seem to touch anything, because nothing has been knocked over when we return to the house. She is destructive enough when there's people around her. So I just feel sad for her and play and give her lots of attention in the evenings.

Unfortunately getting another kitten isn't an option right now, I wish we could, maybe one day.

If she has a favorite bed or binky, then by all means place it by the door and see about moving it further away. But if she really loves laying in the spot, I wouldn't discourage her. Kittens do play with catnip toys, so that may be your option there rather than giving her catnip. Mine used to be at the door to the garage waiting for me when I came home from work. Insisted on an immediate belly rub. Now when he hears the garage door, he just lifts his head but stays pretty much where he is. Cats are quirky! That's for sure.

Unfortunately, the kitten is still very young and separation anxiety being totally alone when used to mom and siblings and a breeder can be a real issue here. I think every parent who has to leave a child in daycare feels guilty! However, nobody knows what this kitty really does during the day (without installing a surveillance camera -- which can be a great idea). I highly doubt the cat is there the entire time. Most kitties love to lay UP on things, so the floor is a little unusual.

Hmm well I hope she will just grow out of it, she was there again today, but the carpet didn't feel warm, so she might have just heard us come in. There is hope :)

Caught her chilling in the bin the other day, this one is only used for paper, so I'm not worried about that :)

Good point Brian.

I always keep bags out of reach from our kittens and also those little plastic rings that you get from beer cans are also dangerous. Not that I drink much beer lol.

Raiden LOVES plastic bags and I have had to either remove them from the bathroom wastepaper baskets or put the baskets away locked in a closet. Any time I give him a bag, I watch him closely. He just loves to lick them and has a field day when we bring in groceries.

That being said, your little baby is so precious!!!!! I think she will settle in and find a great sleeping spot. However, she can definitely hear you as you're coming up to the door, so don't be surprised if she's there waiting for you.
