Strange Behaviour

Hi there.

This is a question about the behaviour of my elderly Burmese Muskey. He has always been like this by the way not just since Dexter passed away.

Every morning we go through the same ritual.

He will rub his cheeks on every single item in the living room including us :mrgreen:

which takes some time I can tell you! We have the stairs in the living room and he will then walk to the top of the stairs and "yowl" his head off at full volume for about 10 minutes. It really is very, very loud.

He then quite happily settles.

Oh he also "yowls" very loudly every time I am on the telephone (my family think it's hilarious) again at full volume. As soon as the call ends he stops. It's got to the point if I have to make an important telephone call I have to put him in another room.

He is extremely happy and amazingly very healthy for his age (nearly 15). He loves being with us and follows me in particular everywhere. If I get up he does too and he doesn't like it when I am busy doing other things. He will either start yowling again or have a mad half hour charging round like some crazy cat.

I'm just wondering what is going on in his head?

Sounds like he wants the sole attention from you! 24/7! I had an elderly cat (17 years old) who wanted to be by our side all the time. It wasn't something she had done all her life. Raiden rubs up against everything the house, too. Laying down a scent -- marking territory. He does it over and over again until he leaves black marks all over the furniture. But I wouldn't have him any other way. Raiden also craves attention and wants to be the center of it every waking minute. He's crying for his walk right now, so I need to get that done. Since your kitty is elderly, I'd spend as much time as I could with him. He loves you!

Diesel is the same way when I'm on the phone. He'll come from wherever he is in the house and start yowling, climbing on me, rubbing his face on my chin, anything he can to get me to pet him. He wants to be held and pet immediately and he purrs so loudly!

It's too funny. Someone suggested that he might thing I'm talking to him and that's why he comes running.

Sherry, yes he does want lots of attention! I quite like it actually that's what I like about this breed and the Bengal.

I'd hate to have a cat that just sat on it's own and didn't want anything to do with me.

I like that Muskey appears to need me so much and he gets thoroughly spoilt particularly as he is in his twilight years. I don't know how much longer we will have him but hopefully many more years.

Just wondering what the 'yowling' is at the top of the stairs every day!

Donna, ha ha it does sound funny the way he runs to you when the telephone rings :mrgreen:

Dexter's voice was quite sweet, little chirrups and such like whereas Muskey makes the most horrendous racket! It's the type of sound that really goes through you lol!

Cats are so in tune with behavior and routine, it's kind of scary. My thought is that this is probably a learned behavior. In other words, he's learned over the years (through trial and error) that doing these peculiar things in combination is most likely to get him what he wants. And he's probably right! :lol:
