Depending on what's being nipped... Don't associate things like fingers/hands/feet/toes with play. Learn to recognise your cats physical actions just before nipping takes place, and try to stop it before it starts. In a better context, if stroking your cat leads to purring, but stroking your cat with a heavy hand leads to nipping/pawing at your arm, clearly there's an obvious message. It could also be a result of over excitement, what's the cause of excitement? Play? Other pets? Could the nipping be related to the cat being touched in a sensitive or painful area, bruised maybe? There are many possibilities. Without more specific details it's hard to give a more accurate response.
