A few weeks ago one of my cats peed in two cat beds in two different rooms. I don't know which one and I have been trying to figure out why. I have never had this problem with a cat before. I added a second extra large litter box, the largest I could find. They both use the new litter box so I am thinking the smaller one was too small.

Well this weekend someone peed on another cat bed. It was in the same location as the first incident. I removed it and used Nature's Remedy in the area. I also took someone's advice and put a large plastic storage box in place of the smaller cat box hoping they would now be satisfied. I am not sure what else to do. I spend almost all my free time with them and give them lots of love and attention. They want for nothing…so why would they go around the house peeing?

They are very competitive over me, and I try my best to pay equal attention to them. There is a very definite friction that goes on between them when I hold the cuddly one or if she sleeps with me, but honestly that is why I have cats. I am hoping this is just a phase they will grow out of and only use the litter boxes.

Here's my guess...I think the fact that the peeing was in two different cats beds, and nowhere else (from what you've said?) means it more likely a territorial thing than a medical problem or some problem with the litter box. If that's correct, then I think the remedy would be to try to understand what is going on between the cats, possibly with respect to their sleeping arrangements. It might be as simple as making sure both cats have equally desirable perches to sleep on without contention with the other cat. Maybe a second cat tree?

I think you're right Brian. The vet didn't even want to test them because she was pretty sure it was behavioral and I didn't know which one was doing it. They have 3 "trees" but the one in the bedroom is by far the favorite. They have a race to the top perch and the looser sleeps two levels down or they both wind up on the top tier. The aggressive one (alpha) does not let the loving one sleep on the bed with me but lately she has wound up on the bed but usually only has the courage to stay below my knees. When she goes up by my side the alpha starts ripping at the carpet on the tree very loudly. The one on the bed usually leaves when this starts or moves down by my feet.

The only time the alpha is affectionate towards me is when I am in bed. She kneads me and throws herself against me. It is not all that enjoyable because she is so rough, but I don't discourage her and pet her gently. She usually only stays a while and moves on to the tree where she can supervise the other cat's behavior. The loving one climbs up the back of the headboard and touches me through the open spaces. If my hand is by the edge of the bed she taps my hand with her paw. During the day she never leaves my side and she falls asleep on me every night on the sofa. They are two completely different cats, physically, emotionally, diet, body structure…I have a hard time believing they were from the same litter. They were rescued at the same time from another state and transported down here. I suspect they were from different litters. That's one of the mysteries I will never know the answer to.

I hadn't thought about a second tall tower gym, maybe that would give them each a territory to claim. Neither one has used the storage bin litter box yet.

My cats have only ever peed outside the litter box three times. Each time was because the litterbox hadn't been cleaned for too long (thanks to a cat sitter who won't be hired again) and they peed on their cat bed twice and a duffel bag once. My theory was that it was the next closest thing to a little box (sort of box shaped, soft, smelled like cats).

Anyway, my cats are all male and don't really have alpha issues so I'm hoping yours are the same.

My cats are both female, and one is very dominant and aloof. The other is very submissive and affectionate. They have two clean litter boxes. I clean them the minute they go. I would have to evacuate the house otherwise (whew!).

If only we could understand why kitties do this! You have two litter boxes, which is great, lots of cat trees. If this is a jealousy thing .... then that has to be solved. There should be room on your lap for both of them. LOL. The whole peeing outside the litter box is so aggravating and once a new place is used, Jackson Galaxy recommends putting a litter box there (a new one). Cats really prefer a litter box. You might want to try http://www.spiritessences.com and see if they have something you might be able to use. I think I finally figured out what happened. My neighbor has a chihuahua and visits frequently with him. The last time he was over, the leg of a chair in my office was wet and there was a puddle of pee under the chair on the tile. That room has a cat box and I am pretty sure the dog peed on the floor. That is the same room that had one of the cat beds that was peed on too. I think the dog may have been the one that peed in both cat beds! Each time was right after the dog had been in the house and it has not reoccurred since he has not been over.

It's good I added the second large litter box, but I am relieved that it looks like my cats are not the ones doing this. Now I have to let my neighbor know what I suspect. The dog runs into the bedrooms every time he comes over. I can't lock the cats out of their litter box rooms and I don't want to put them away during our weekends together. I guess I will have to ask her to leave him home unless we go out on the patio.
